Education is important to me. I have degrees in pure math and computer science. I have taught math at private, public, and charter schools, at universities, and in a prison. I waited three years on the wait list for my first child to attend the UT Lab School or Priscilla Pond Flawn Child and Family Research Laboratory. She thrived there. Once she was too old to attend the lab school, she enrolled in a public elementary school. She spent a month there as I watched her spirit dim. I was afraid to try something as radical as Clearview Sudbury, but it seems radical was necessary. My daughter is becoming a real person who can think her own thoughts. She decides what values are important to her. She learns about herself. She learns from other students and staff of all ages, and they learn from her. The staff at the school treat her with respect. They are able to give her their attention and to truly see her because they are not distracted and kept busy by an endless check list. She asks me how to use correct grammar, and I show her. She asks staff how to calculate taxes, and they show her. She asks me how multiplication works, and I show her. She asks staff if her friend's sketchy story about giant caterpillars is true, and they learn about caterpillars together. The girl knows more about life cycles of different species than I ever knew. I am no longer worried that she will be at a disadvantage. It is clear to me that she is on the best path I can provide her.

Love this school. Both of my kids started attending here at Kindergarten age, and it's been such a beautiful environment for them to grow in. Highly recommended if you trust that children have a natural, inherent impulse toward learning, development, and moving toward their full potential.

This is how school should be! As an engineer, I am literally jealous of my son who attends this school....I can't help but wonder what would have been if this type of education were available before. I've never seen my kid so happy

So many schools focus on children doing the same thing at the same time in the same way. Sitting still, being compliant, following directions, and memorizing information will not prepare our children for a future we can only begin to imagine. I was so happy to find Clearview Sudbury School for my son. It prioritizes self-directed, democratic education. My son is learning how to direct his time and energy in service of his own goals. He has learned how to build a personal computer from scratch. Next, he wants to work on refurbishing a jet ski! He and his peers—no matter what they choose to pursue—are learning problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration day in and day out. My son is eager to go to school in the morning, comes home happy, and feels sad when school is closed for holidays. He had made great friends, and the adults are passionate and caring. I am so grateful this school exists!

We've been Clearview parents for 8 years now. Clearview offers an environment where all kids thrive. Through self-direction they spend their time joyfully pursuing whatever it is they love -- whether it's programming, writing, capture-the-flag, gaming with friends, fixing a car, doing a science experiment, baking a cake, taking a spontaneous field trip, playing a card game, putting on a play, biking, running a business, making a steak dinner with the wild onions they found in the park (true story) or 1000+ other possibilities. They follow THEIR interests. Every day is different. Students enjoy freedom of movement and freedom of association, and they are treated as whole people worthy of full respect. The democratic aspect of the school allows students to become agents of change, use their voices, and take responsibility for their actions. Sudbury schools create self-possessed, confident, inquisitive, joyful kids who know themselves deeply and never want to stop learning. Our kids count the days until school starts again with gleeful anticipation every break. They never want school to end. We are lucky Austin has Clearview!

This is not a school...this is a day care.

My son is beginning his third year at Clearview Sudbury School this fall. As always he is excited to go to school. As a parent, this is a source of joy for me. The staff at Clearview help to create a safe and caring environment for the students. The democratically run Judicial Commitee empowers the kids and teaches them responsibilty to their community and themselves. My son is becoming a confident, self-guided young man thanks to the model of the Clearview community. This is a great school for kids to discover their strengths and a nurturing environment to grow in.

We took a leap of faith by pulling my son out of "regular" schools (at age 16) and moving to Austin so that he could attend Clearview Sudbury School. It has changed our lives for the better, and now I cringe at the thought of putting a child through the hostile environment of traditional schooling. I'm not saying that self-directed learning is for everyone, but if you are considering alternative education for yourself or your child, spend some time watching videos and reading books and blogs about democratic schools like Sudbury. Then spend a visiting week at Clearview -- it could be a life-changing experience for you and your family, too!

My son struggled within the public school environment for 3 years as a young person and male. We had been accepted to the Sudbury school up in the Pacific Northwest but suddenly needed to relocate to Austin. Sudbury was not up yet when we arrived; my son struggled and was stifled, unfulfilled, restless in the unfortunate way. When Clearview Sudbury opened its doors, he was tossed in there with glee and waving hands. As a parent who works in the field of education and special education, schools that are democratic, self-governed, and bent on caring for the community and its members through authentic caring relationships, go far. My son has grown immeasurably (statisticians may loathe me now), and is a remarkable little leader and fantastic person who is happy to "go to school" every day. Another bonus that strays from the current "response to intervention" paradigm- he has become quite the reader by his own work, perseverance, and curiosity. The previous school was trampling his innate process; he just needed time to breathe and figure it out for himself and he did! Clearview Sudbury is a fantastic site for personal and intellectual growth.
