I have had 3 kids go to this school, Hard PASS for us. This school gets 7/10 because of attendance, Not because it IS a great school. They don't welcome parent involvement like they claim and they let kids fall behind academically. This is not a title one school so if your kid needs services for ANY reason do NOT go here. They also are not welcoming for advanced students either. Attend an award ceremony. They give a hundreds of awards for attendance and nothing really for grades or achievements. As a parent it leaves a bad taste in you mouth. Like your kid doesn't matter, only their attendance does. The lunch room is ran like a prison, heavens forbid you kid need anything. Also they WANT your kid there for free government breakfast, if you can even really call it that. Milk, fruit and a packaged thing. The variety of nasty is plenty though. Cereal after cereal and packaged yuck. I guess it's better than nothing. My last kid, whom we eventually removed, had started having anxiety attacks before school. So we looked into why, turns out she was getting harassed every morning by adults at a morning intake table of some sort near the entrance inside about why she wasn't on time (meaning for breakfast, because my kid was rarely actually late). They started confronting her and threatening her with comments like, why are you always late?, is there problems at home?, You will loose recess if you don't come on time, You have to be here for breakfast or you are late. In general they made her feel like she was in trouble every morning. When we confronted the office about this they blew it off, and her teacher while sympathetic had no idea it was occurring. This is just one of the many reasons to dislike the school. The did not notice our youngest falling behind and did not care that out middle kid was advanced and bored. Our middle kids teacher (now retired thankfully) when she was in 2nd grade even sent our kid home with a nasty note about how rude and arrogant our daughter was and because when asked if she was bored and thought the class a waste she replied yes. Well anyone who knows anything about advanced kids knows what they get in IQ they loose else where. My daughter lost her filter and like I said, she was in 2nd grade. So of course my kid had a rough year and this same principal did not want to move my kid to another class. I have heard this principal retired but I still would choose to not send kids here. Although I will say Nurse Rhonda And Miss Lisa rock

I have really enjoyed Truman. There are a lot of good things to say regarding the school.Truman has SPARC for the children's childcare before and after school. There is currently breakfast served in the classrooms at no cost. The car line seems to move pretty well and in an organized manner. Truman is a great school, very professional and friendly. The teachers treat the parents very nicely and clearly cares about the children, giving them the best experience that they can. I am impressed with the classroom environment, the teachers do a good job of encouraging good classroom behavior. The school nurse, custodians, councilor, and other support staff make an effort to support/help the kids. I had a very kind school nurse as a child, but the current school nurse goes above and beyond. I have never been concerned about my children's safety in the school. The door is locked after the children come in, so you have to be buzzed in. I have a child who needed help with reading, writing, and speech. He reads above his grade level and you can understand him. His writing is still catching up, but they work with him and have given me tips to work with him at home.In 5th grade, the children can attend Orchestra class. In Music class, some grades play the recorder. The Art and PE classes are both awesome, as well. There is a library lesson and library checkout. The kids really enjoy the computer lab.Truman does a lot of fun activities with the kids, including a fall and spring fundraiser type party. There have been fireworks and bounce activities at the spring event, the fall event being a dance and having indoor games. The cafeteria has the standard foods, which you can look up a calendar for on sps.

I am a former student here, who is now in 8th grade. After Truman, I left and attended other schools. However, I still have yet to find a school with better treatment of children by teachers, and positive relationships and immediate acceptance of "new" kids. It is public, but honestly there really wasn't ever any trouble by the kids, and when there was the teachers always had it under control. This is one of the best schools you can put your child into.

We moved to a neighborhood when our kids were preschoolers just to enroll them at Truman. They went all the way through from k-gr. 5. I visited the school weekly to have lunch with my kids. I was always impressed with the way teachers treated students. It was a quiet and orderly school. My kids felt safe and respected there. Teachers were innovative in keeping students engaged and worked well with parents to problem solve when issues came up, whether is was socially, academically, or whatever. Great family community with parents involved and fun all-school events. Highly recommend this school!!
