context: attended this school for a year, then moved to a more competitive school. (not prestigious, by any means but the gap is pretty large.)at first, i thought i was fairly prepared as i was a 4.0 student. but the college readiness really speaks for itself, and the education you're receiving is astoundingly behind. so, you're getting the walmart version of a high achieving student. you're safe within the bubble of this school, but once you're handed a test meant to test your progress from the state all of it is gibberish, and it is not the result of "not paying attention". 1/4 of the students in some of my class misbehaves, slows down the class and others are half-asleep like they're still in middle school lol.some of the teachers are Really waste your time, i've had days when some classes will be doing no work for most of the class to discuss irrelevant matters which is unprofessional and childish. there's some really nice teachers that do the best they can with what they could, though. :)there's a lot of support for special need students, and there's a lot of them so there is that appeal. i don't have the inside scoop, but by the looks of it they are accommodated for appropriately.there's a looooaaddd of fights at this school, it'll be at lunch, passing period, after school. there's a fat line of "troublemakers" and "non troublemakers" so you're involved if you hang out with the right people.there's also good mental health support. the wellness center provides a quiet, dark room if you're having a particularly bad day and there's little limits. you can also get a therapist pretty easily, which is cool.overall, i'd say you could do muuch better than this in SF. definitely do not recommend.

The second post below this one was posted by me two years ago, I should've been more honest about my review. My new advice is to experience Mission High School then to make your judgement about it because any school even if it has bad reviews can be better than what it seems. I mean if Mission is such a bad school why is it still here?To future readers, in a few months or so, Mission is changing it's name!! Though at this time, we don't know what it'll be.

Personally, for me, I was panicking because so many people have stereotypes of Mission High school and how it's bad. It just depends on the person and the people they chose to be with.

My son attended one year at Mission. On the positive side, most teachers were deeply committed to the kids and were extremely skilled, almost heroic, instructors. Two were breathtakingly bad; a drama class consisted of little besides learning a Shakespeare soliloquy, with no analysis or acting involved. To be fair, most of the year my son reported he was happy with the school and I think the administration tried to do its best for him and other students.Mission is proud of its diversity, and it adds a great richness to the school. I think it’s fair to say that in Mission’s case, the diversity is ethnic and national, and there is little social or economic diversity. Most kids come from low-income families with really difficult, even traumatic, backgrounds. Mission works hard to lift up these kids--it is, I think, the school’s strongest value. The problem, however, is that the attention and emotional energy required to support kids through their traumas (including homelessness, gangs, murders of loved ones) means that less energy is available to provide a safe and structured education for the kids without these challenged backgrounds. Classrooms are often loud and chaotic because there are few rules or consequences for bad behavior.

This school has allowed a teacher to design a social studies program based on hating the POTUS and half the country. It should be shut down.

School talks about how society let's people down instead of how to make society better.

Our son graduated from Mission last week after spending three years at the school. He has been so happy there! The staff is motivated, caring and very involved with the students. It really feels like a big family. The principal is a superstar (he won "principal of the year" 2 years in a row) and is beloved by teachers, students and parents alike. It is truly diverse and a wonderful open-minded and welcoming environment where the kids really feel they can be themselves. It brims with opportunities and prepares the kids for a great college experience.

My daughter is a senior (class of 2015) and loves it here. Why is Mission a great school? * small class sizes * teachers keep their classes engaged by actually teaching; they don't just tell you what to read in the textbook * abundance of after school programs & clubs * ASAP -- read more about it here -> http://missionasap.org/asap/. They paid for and sent our daughter to the University of Texas for a sports medicine camp over the summer * the staff really cares about the kids, especially principal Guthertz. What other principal would have taken time out of his busy day to greet a freshman on her first day?? As a result of attending this awesome school, my daughter got accepted to every UC (Cal, UCLA, Davis, San Diego, Santa Cruz) and CSU (Cal Poly, LongBeach, SF State) she applied to. If you haven't considered Mission, consider it now. Schedule a tour. It's a fantastic place!

My son is a senior at Mission and loves the school. I have been active in the PTA for some years and know the principal well; he is a fantastic positive force. The school has been improving greatly in the past years and is riding a fantastic wave of positive momentum. The staff provides great support and is very approachable.

Mission High School is a great well-rounded school. My son has thrived here. MHS really cares about each student's education and well being. Willing students succeed here. Teachers are accessible and they communicate with you on how your child is doing. Kids keep busy because there are so many things to do and get involved. We love Mission HS.

We couldn't be happier with Mission High School! Our son is a freshman and is thriving at Mission. The teachers have a thoughtful curriculum and keeps our son interested in classes. The updates through the school loop is outstanding. The sports program is disciplined and creates a strong sense of family with the team. Back to school night was done well as we had mini parent/teacher conferences with all of our son's teachers.
