SECURITY GUARD IS MEAN TO THE STUDENTS. PLUS HE PRETTY MUCH IS THE PRINCIPALS (GOMER PILE) BROWN NOSER.SOME AIDES LEAVE EARLY & ALWAYS ON THEIR CELLPHONES. Teachers are exceptional and do there job wellBut the grade levels of students are below average. .Considering the students get free breakfast, lunch and 2 snacks a day. Good luck

Ever since our principle Mr. Brian entered the school , carnivals never happened again. Next, the school bearly has any events going on which really makes it even more bland then it already is. Also another problem i have with this school is that another bathroom has a broken sink. Next the school had so many kids that a lot of the school students had to be taught on the floor, which is not ideal. Finally, you shouldn't go to this school because it only supports K-8 which is sad because just when your kid is in 7th Grade they already have to go to another school. Another issue is fights, many kids have been RKO'ing each other and doing many things, the school really didn't do much of a effect about it. I have a suggestion about what other school you can go to that supports your child's endeavours is School 32, but you may want to read my review on that one.-Former Student of School 17

Im convinced the good reviews of this school are written by the teachers and the principle herself. I had my child in this school unfortunately for 3 horrible years, two of which I fought the district to relocate my child to another school to no avail, in which I was forced to just pay for private school thats how terrible this school is. My child caught MRSA and I notified the school principle who did nothing to hire a professional cleaner or notify other parents, I found out from other parents numerous times about children having lice (the school NEVER notified the parents when children had lice), BULLYING is a huge thing in this school and this principle does not take it serious at all! my child as well as another mothers child which I would speak to at pick up (completely different class) were bullied very often and despite meetings and letters to the principle mrs morehead nothing was done! My child and another mothers child had UTI infections at the age of 7 from not being able to use the restroom because the teacher would deny them the opportunity to use the bathroom freely. Upon pick up one day two 10 year old boys were fighting at the top of the stairs, bloodied and everything and nobody stopped them but 1 parent who stepped in and the principle, teachers nobody stopped the fight or even disciplined these children. zero supervision when it counts. this school and their policy is disgusting, theres a janitor room down on the first floor of the school that smells horrible of cigarettes and leaks into the hallway in which there are classrooms and fills the air, seems all the teachers or the janitors smoke inside that room and its terrible that its even allowed inside of a school. this school should be shut down, there is zero challenge and kids are subjected to this school based on location and ethnicity, they dump children here when their last name isnt white enough and good for a school of better educational rating and let them literally float in the mess that Mrs Morehead allows in this school. Sad that I live in the area and my child was subjected to this school for so long. Myself and 4 other mothers did not return after last school year.

Principal Moorehead and her teachers are really dedicated to educating our kids.!! So far 3 of my boys have attended school 17-the youngest is in Pre-K. My oldest is currently in Yonkers Middle-School and doing very well. School really helped to lay the foundation for our older boys success. The other half ofcourse is parental involvement ! Ms.Moorehead is Amaazing !

This is the first year my son and my daughter have going to the school. so far so good. all staffs are very helpful, very attentive and concerns about every student. it seems like all the staffs know all the kids that goes to the school by name, it is like a big family. teachers always have time to talk to parents, and tell them how they are doing, and give you things you can do for kids to do better. the schools is very informative, keep track of very event and make sure all parents knows kids that goes to the school seem to be very kids as well.

On Wednesday, News 12 showed janitors at School 22 clearing paths for the children for the next day. Yesterday, the kids were back at school and School 17's playground, which is used now as a parking lot, was a sheet of ice.

I am a parent that is also very unhappy with this place, that's supposedly a school. Last year my child came home with work that he already knew. He would write sloppy all over his homework notebook and his teacher never reprimanded him. Hos teacher didn't help him and tell him he was doing certain things wring, which is a shame. Plus there's never any toilet roll in the bathroom which is so digusting, making me feel as if I am living in a third world country. This school can do better but sadly it doesn't. I regret sending my kids to this sorry excuse of a school.

My review is in response to the 1/24/14 review. As a teacher at School 17 I personally take offense to many of the comments that were made about our school. I have worked in schools across Yonkers and in other districts and never have I worked for a principal who cared as much for the children in a school as Principal Morehead. Not only does she know the students' names, but also knows so much about them. As for the teachers, there are more dedicated and knowledgeable teachers at School 17 then at any other school where I have worked. As a result, students at School 17 have an advantage over students in other schools. I am also not sure how a parent can feel uninformed when weekly phone messages occur containing information, updates, and motivational messages as well as a monthly calendar with detailed events. As far as the PTA (Parent/Teacher Association), involvement starts with membership. If a school with 500 students has approximately 20 members - what is the PTA to do? Join your School 17 PTA! In closing, to paraphrase the late John F. Kennedy; "Ask not what your child's school can do for you, but what you can do for your child's school."

School 17 is a school that fosters learning, creativity and growth in a nurturing, happy and stable environment. This school will produce respectful, high-achieving and contributing citizens. Our school accepts the challenge of preparing students for a rapidly changing world and will provide the opportunity to learn and succeed.

I am a parent of school 17 for many years and I have no complaints about the staff. The principal Rita Morehead is great with the children and also the office staff is always there to help with any questions you may have.I have 3 children that have attended there one of which will be graduating this year, my other 2 children got into the best junior h.s. and and h.s. in yonkers after being taught in school 17. I have also encouraged others to send their children there , which they have and have had no complaints with the school. If you want your child to learn, and be successful throughout their future school years school 17 is the perfect place for them to do so. I am glad that I picked this school to lead my child on the road to success and if success is what you strive for in your child school 17 is an excellent start.

My review is in response to the latest review given by a kindergartener's mother. I feel the same way. Last week on the first day of school kids were wandering around some of them crying because they didn't know where they were going. There was no one there to help them. They walked into my sons classroom which wasn't the right room and needed someone to help them. I am talking about five yr old kids walking around alone. I didn't receive a letter stating my child's room or teacher. I had to call the school ahead if time to find out. I feel ther is a real lack of adult supervision around in the building. Definitely needs more organization.
