This school could have a lot more improvements

My child has had an amazing experience at this school. The staff all seem very caring, the teachers get my child excited about learning and the amount of homework is very manageable. An administrative change was DEFINITELY needed and the new principal is fantastic, a real breath of fresh air. The dress code has changed to be less sexist and less impossible to follow. The sports teams are fantastic with great, positive coaches.

This is middle school folks… I remember middle school being awful. My child’s experience was hard knocks- the teachers seems great. The class size ratio on this rating is incorrect. The class sizes are large which leads to issues. The pandemic definitely causes behavioral issues and new challenges. Help your kid stay strong and not tolerated your classic bullies and they will be fine. I don’t feel like as a parent there was a connect1 maybe indelicate stopped the process of communication, normal open houses, and normal parent teacher conferences- but they need to do a better job with that. As a parent it will help me help the teacher to ensure my child is doing the right thing. It’s not a bad school… they could add more extracurricular activities- and they shouldn’t have to decide between art and band…

This school has mostly good teachers and learning, especially the advanced teacher take an extra step, but that’s where my compliments stop. I was severely bullied at this school with little support from staff and administration. This went on every year I was there and had cause mental health issues and physical issues as well. Unless you weren’t popular or bend to their will, you will be severely bullied like I was persistently and don’t expect adults to help you. This is the reason why I left for Central Academy of Technology and Arts, which is a much better school. If you are a parent, please send your students elsewhere. The environment here was and probably still is EXTREMELY TOXIC!

This is a great school! My son 6th grade teachers are great! I am very pleased with Cuthbertson Middle!

Not the best. It is obvious that the head principal is more concerned about his image and the school’s image and scores in the community as opposed to focusing on the students and those that really need help. Waxhaw is a small town and is a part of the Charlotte suburbs, however, school ratings are what he is concerned with. It’s a sad reality and I regret having my child go to this school.

It’s a bad school with the majority of the teachers here not that great I was a student here for 7th and 8th grade and this year I’m headed to 9th grade. The school is incredibly biased and overall not as great a school as they make it out to be. The 2 years I spent at this school were my 2 worst years academically wise because i couldn’t keep up at all . It may be in a very nice area but that doesn’t make it a nice school and that definitely doesn’t make the people that go their nice. The kids here are some of the snobbiest stuck up brats I’ve ever met in my life, and just over all jerks that try to act way older than they are

My daughter is finishing up 6th grade and has thoroughly enjoyed her time here. She has experienced some different teaching styles which will prepare her better for college. I have been impressed with the ELA and Math classes the most. The principal communicates weekly to the parents and has plenty of forums for parents to attend for more information. He addresses bullying quickly and fairly from what I can tell. Overall CMS has been a blessing.

Cuthbertson is a great school teachers are very understanding and try really hard to make sure every student understands the material. Bullying is almost non existent at this school which is really rare. My favorite part of the school is their band program, they have so many different varieties of instruments to play. I hope Cuthbertson stays around for many years to come!

I noticed that the reviews were fairly old, so I thought I would provide a more recent view of CMS. My daughter finished here in 2015 and now my son attends. I have actively volunteered since my daughter was in 6th grade. Our family really likes CMS! We have been pleased with most of the teachers and the education that our children have received. I would agree with the comment about EOG testing. I've never believed that tests prove that any student has learned a thing, but I understand that the state puts heavy emphasis on these tests, so the schools feel compelled to "drill" the students on test-taking strategies. I would also agree with the comment regarding outdated websites and teacher communication, which is why I rated the school 4 stars. My experience is that a well-organized, self-motivated student will do great. A student who struggles with organization ( typical of many middle schoolers) will have more difficulty. We found the 6th grade teachers to be the most difficult to work with when my son found it hard to adjust to the expectations of middle school. One language arts teacher, essentially, told us he would have to figure it out, period. No wiggle room, no late work, no exceptions. I understand the need to teach students about responsibility, but my understanding is that the whole point of middle school is to TEACH these things. Simply giving zeros to a first term 6th grader is not teaching. Despite these exceptions, though, we've have good things to say about CMS. What I love about the school is the administration, the community feeling, and the school spirit. There are numerous extracurricular activities for the students, and truthfully, something for everyone.

The entrance to the school is immaculate and welcoming. A Volunteer may greet so you can sign in and asked to wear a Visitor's Badge. CMS prides itself in protection of students and staff. The friendly office personnel display excellent professionalism You will notice exceptional Art created by the students and the band may be filling the halls with music. At the Gymnasium you can witness various activiites. The entire school is bright and cheerful because of the custodial staff striving for cleanliness. There are many choices of foods in the Cafeteria. In the Media Center students are working on computers, checking out and reading books and a learning experience being conducted by the Media Specialist. The students have an air of friendliness with their smiles and it is obvious these students enjoy being at Cuthbertson Middle School. They are privileged students partaking in many aspects of education taught by top notch educators. The School Administrators are readily available to resolve any situtation which may arise. The school consists of one BIG FAMILY all working together.

I am writing this review to set something straight. A parent on here wrote that the school punishes kids that have challenges in learining. That is completely false. They do give out Academic Probation which means that if you get a 77 or below in any class you aren't allowed to attend functions, they do this because they want the kid to work on improving their grade instead of wasting their time at these functions. You only get called durning our team time (outside time) for homework detention, if you don't do your homework you must stay inside to finish it. As for remediation the teachers usually tell the students seperatley. They also offer homework help on tuesdays and thursdays for students who are struggling, the school tried in many ways to get every child on the same level, it is the students who simply do not care who get punished. I have attened this school for three years (currently in 8th) and love it, I like alot of my teachers, but the eigth grade teachers are HORRIBLE everyday two teachers gossip in the hall and have touble hiding emotions, they also allow us no freedom like the other grades. In, all it was a decent school.

If your child has any challenges in learning I would highly advise you not attend this school. They punish children who struggle with Academic Probation which means the student cannot attend school dances, or any football, basketball game or any social afterschool function. Also, your child is called up in front of the class to line up and go to a special room during recretion time each day for a study hall time inwhich no assistance is offered. This method is very damaging to the students self-esteem. My daughter has been teased by the other students about her grades because its a known fact due to the staff that she struggles in math. My two years at Cutherbertson Middle has been a nightmare and has played havoc on my daughters self-esteem. If your child is perfect and bright this is the school for you so you can help them keep their status to look good. They are failures at assisting students who struggle in any subject instead they take the easy way out and just punish them for what they cannot help.

Upon frequest visits to the school, I always view the students as very well behaved, friendly and on task. Teachers are outstanding and staff works together as one big family with the success of their students as a number one priority.

I think Cuthbertson is a great School. Both of my children go there and the teacher to child ratio is better than a lot of other schools around the same area. The School has great pride and keeps moving forward.

The total school environment is very organized. This includes cleanliness of the building, cafeteria management, school grounds and mainly all the classrooms. The Principal is on "top" of any and all issues which arise. There seem to be no discipline problems. Each child appears to be there to learn and participate in the many sports and extra curricular activities offered. It would be great if each parent would participate in the Go For The Gold which is simply donating $50, $75, $100 or ANY amount, so the school could have 100% participation for each and every student. It's a one time contribution. Giving school a 4 star rating because of the lack of more participation by parents.

Most teachers are wonderful. Some seem very overwhelmed and unorganized. Too many practice tests for EOG start in April and seems like learning stops when practice tests and busy work for tests start. Volunteering has nothing to do with it - you can volunteer for school activities, fundraisers but not to help teachers with overwhelmed.

We moved here recently from the Raleigh, NC area and I have a daughter with autism attending this school. So far, she has had an amazing experience! The administration and teachers are very sensitive to her individual needs and have been able to provide the support she needs. She loves going to school and I see a confidence in her that I have never seen before. She has been successfully attending Art and PE with typical children and she is given the choice to eat lunch in her self contained class or the cafeteria; usually she choose the cafeteria! She has recently started riding the bus to school per her request. Her teacher shared with me that he feels tremendous support from the administration, which is a real challenge at times. Her teacher is a grandparent of a child with special needs and he "gets it". Thank you Cuthbertson for helping my daughter reach her potential!

Cuthbertson is Great. This is my daughters first year at Cuthbertson and she has loved it. We moved here last year from NY and it has been such a blessing to have teacher and a principle that listen. Go Cavs
