Both my children (one with an IEP) attend Maybeury. The school is a wonderful community. The teachers have been amazing. I honestly feel like they know each of my children and appreciate them for their individual skills and talents. My kids are thriving. The PTA is active and provides so many opportunities and additional resources for both teachers, students and families overall. Go for a tour of the school! You’ll see.

I would say that actually getting the kids taught they do great. But keeping an eye on them playing outside and making sure they are safe. I have seen them neglect my child on 9 separate occasions. Things have happened to my child that could have 100% been prevented and each incident it was my child reporting to her teacher she was hurt. Then instead of adding more supervision to see what the teacher is doing wrong after the 9th time... They then move my child to another recess team. My question as a parent is why was more supervision not placed on this teacher at incident #3... Also my child has an active IEP. During a video conference between 2 teachers myself and my daughter we all chose a place for my daughter to sit. Seating was a discussion that was held during her initial IEP and her orientation. 2 teachers then went behind my back and sat her in a different place they chose. Then lied to the principal and said they diddnt agree to it after a video recording states the opposite... Then today.. My daughter got food poison this past weekend they want a Covid test now bc I called and said she needed a day to rest. .. They wanted a test b4 she came back and that they had a test on site...So I went up there and got the test... It was a simple blue box... I look at this woman and I ask her... How do I get this back to you.. And she writes an email on a sticky... Ok.. Well guys.. Im confused... Right.. Ok. get home. Open the box.. And it looks like a pregnancy test.. 1st thing noticed.. no directions. I open up this stick thing. I have to force my kid to put this stick up her nose.. and then liquid & its just arrows SO I call the school back. I am sooo confused and the receptionist says oh well their are directions in the box. I was like no there are no directions. I am told to hold on. All the sudden a Spanish speaking person comes on the line and im so country and say what is going on who are you? She said you said you needed an interpreter I said what? I need to speak to the nurse ma'am. This nurse comes on the line and tells me I don't know I gave my husband 1 a month ago but don't remember. I could send you this paper but it won't help you should you tube it.. And while I am voicing my frustration in a calm but direct manner.. She hung up on me... I reach out to the principal.no word.. so I reach out to the Director of Henrico. She tells me she will email me directions. I diddnt get them till 1hr later after. And I was supo to do it all on cam

We love everything about Maybeury from the students and families, to the teachers and administration, to the community events and fundraisers, and the extra enrichment activities. Will be sad when my youngest graduates.

We absolutely love Maybeury. It has provided my three kids with an enriched environment of learning and taught them how to excel in many academic programs, but even more they have learned about being a good citizen, a good friend, and made amazing friendships. Our school not only provides an amazing education it creates a community for not only the children but the families. It was impacted us in the best way and we are thankful we have a few more years here.

As the mother of two current Maybeury students, I’m surprised by our school’s 5/10 rating because I rank our family’s experience a 10/10. After reading some articles about Great Schools’ ranking methodology, I believe Maybeury is being penalized for the diversity that makes our school truly special. My husband and I earned degrees from some of the country’s top universities and we are thrilled with the quality of Maybeury’s education. Very bright children at Maybeury have every opportunity to challenge themselves and learn advanced content, while also gaining valuable lessons in empathy because Maybeury has a wonderful special needs program and serves low income students. The teachers at Maybeury seek out our school because they know what a special, nurturing environment it is. My children have attended private and public school programs and I think Maybeury’s teachers are the best of the best. The Maybeury PTA is extremely active and plans great social activities that bring our community closer together. The PTA raises $50,000 a year that goes directly to our school, funding special programs like our STREAM lab, community garden lessons, a rock wall and literacy tools that very few Henrico schools have access to. Parents are encouraged to be an active part of their students’ education and there are many ways to get involved. Neither my husband nor I are from Richmond and we’ve met many lifelong friends through the Maybeury community.Great Schools data is only one of many tools to evaluate school quality, so I encourage parents who are interested in Maybeury to speak to a neighbor, call the school’s office and get more information.

We are transferring due to a move, but my son and I loved Maybuery! The teachers all made sure my son had a good experience, recognized his strengths and weaknesses. I could not have been more satisfied. All the staff said how much they will miss my son and are very genuine and look out for the best interest of the kids. I love the extra activities they have for the children to participate or volunteer. The PTA is active and encourage new parent participation...I even headed up a Bingo night my 1st year. This is just a great place to be! Going to miss everyone there!!!

We have been Maybeury parents for three years now, and couldn't be more proud of the staff and students. Everyone rallies around a theme each year: like Growing Great Learners, Everyone Fits In-- and the kids all learn the Mallard promise-- to be honest and good friends to one another at all times. There is a great mix of families-- both racially and socioeconomically-- and this past year the school hosted it's first Culture Fair, where children and parents presented about their heritages. The PTA is extremely active and has provided a the school with a garden and garden instructor, a climbing wall for the gym, after school enrichment programs in the fall (tree climbing, dance classes, etc)... Many loving parents and staff members work hard for our little Mallards every day. This is a fantastic public school!!

I have found getting services for a child with special needs is hard. For one it's hard to get them to admit that your child needs services, so be careful if your child has reading problems since you must seek outside help to really know how low the level is. A school year goes by fast and you will still find yourself talking about receiving help and the years over. You tell me when a reading teacher tells you she never heard of at home after school reading help what does that mean? Its like an insult to my intelligence.

We moved to the area a year ago and our children were fortunate enough to have been assigned to Maybeury Elementary School. We've been extremely happy with the teachers and administration of the school, and feel that our children are receiving an excellent education in a safe and caring environment. There are deficiencies, but in my opinion they are a result of the general shortcomings of our public education system not from the staff at Maybeury.

I have been very underwhelmed with the staff, administration, and education my child revieved at Maybeury. For years he complained of boredom and administation was contacted many times. If your child doesn't fit in their square box of a normal paced average learner you will find it difficult to advocate for your child. They will listen and nod heads with no further action or follow up. They will do everthing within their power to counteract your requests for further assistance and keep the numbers at status quo without your childs best interest and education in their hearts

I have not been impressed with Maybeury Elementary. My son struggles everyday and it is a fight everyday for him to get the help he needs. He has a rare genetic disorder and I feel I (the parent) have been dismissed on knowing what is best for my son. I have not been impressed with the special education department either.

We were lucky enough to have our daughter attend 2nd grade here. Unfortunately, we are being relocated to MD so we can't continue. This school has an excellent administration and staff. They are parent friendly and encourage us to be as involved as we want to be. My daughter's teacher is absolutely amazing and has done so much to figure out how to help my daughter succeed in the classroom individually, as well as socially, as I'm sure she's done for the other students as well. My daughter does have an IEP and is fully integrated into regular classrooms, but I have been impressed as to how closely they follow her progress and come up with new ways to make sure she has a successful year. The PTA here is phenomenal (if a bit clique-y; I say this because I volunteered for a million things that they never asked me to help with in the end , probably because they didn't know me. We were only here a year.). But they do a number of family friendly things throughout the year. A phenomenal neighborhood school that I really wish we didn't have to leave behind.
