This school creates an unsafe learning and living environment. Many children who attend here report multiple cases of bullying and harassment. Homophobia, racism, and bigotry, in general, run rampant in this school's social environment. Young LGBTQ+ members report feeling unsafe and uncomfortable here. My personal experience with my child learning here was anything but positive. My son was disrespected by teachers and staff, and refused to acknowledge his gender identity. When he reported his sexual assaulter, who attends the school, to the school officials they told him that unless he makes an aggressive action towards him they are unable to do anything. They also didn't accommodate my son with his disabilities even though he has a 504 and an IEP. When we tried to take him out of Newark Memorial and transfer him into an independent study program, they switched his classes to his required special education classes that he was not enrolled in previously and claimed they had been giving him the required accommodations the entire time. We stuck with our decision to transfer him and then on the day he was originally supposed to go back, a school riot broke out. Multiple children ended up in handcuffs and one was even arrested. I would not recommend anyone send their child here unless they want them to get hurt.

Quite frankly, as a student who attended this district for my entire life, I whole heartily think that any family considering sending their child here should not. It is said that no student should be let fail but I've heard several members including staff of high position saying "let them fail." This is not acceptable by any means. This district is laying off so many teachers while other schools need more. This school will compromise the education of your child, and if you can, do not send them here. This school is safe and accepting and has a fantastic visual and performing art program (some of it's only saving graces) but the only way I would recommend this school is if the district would begin to think more of the education of me, us, the students, instead of giving themselves a pay raise while we are still unready for college.

I am former student and I have to say the school has made significant improvements from the time I graduated in 2002. It doesn't compare to the highly rated Mission San Jose for example BUT it has everything a student needs to succeed. I would say it is up to the student to make the most of their experience here as the teachers and staff are great and supportive. From what I understand, there is a big reduction in issues such as fights, etc.

As a junior at NM, I must say that this school has provided me with all the articles of virtues and knowledge so far to advance me into my ultimate ambition. In all honesty, it is up to the STUDENT, I cannot stress that enough however, to extract the knowledge given by the teacher, and then study what they have inquired. There are a few notable teachers, specifically the honors and AP teachers, that only tolerate the best. The non-competitive environment allows the students to challenge themselves, rather than their peers, thus giving them the motive to succeed without stressing about the accomplishments and/or challenges others may seem to impose upon them. As for the teachers, they translate their awareness of the students into somewhat challenging tests. A majority of students, as I struggle to remain neutral, fail primarily due to the lack of ambition or that students share much in common in terms of lacking the alacrity of succeeding. These negative factors contribute to the school's overall standing as far as academics go, Above all else, education is an opportunity; a private school may compel the child to acquire certain accomplishments, but they cannot coerce the desire.

Compare this to most of the school, they are no where close. Generation is changing and so are the morals of students and the Newark community. I would definitely say this school is cooperative with it's students. I'm a Senior rightnow and I've seen this school transform to a much more safer and supportive school. Ofcourse thanks to the new principal Mr. Marquez.
