My children love attending 7 Hills. We find the staff to be friendly, supportive and focused on helping students achieve and do their best. I personally love the extracurricular programs: bike shop, band, wood shop, STEM, creative writing etc. . The opportunities available in this small town are amazing.

As a parent, I have been incredibly frustrated with my child's experience at Seven Hills. The focus is on rules, obedience, and conformity. The administration is more concerned about what girls wear than how they educate their students. 4th-grade girls are required to follow the same dress code as 8th-grade girls. At back-to-school night, the teacher was happy to explain how she "fixed a 4th-grade girl's" clothes to be more "modest." REALLY? Is "modesty" even a thing for a 9-year-old? It is beyond me how this is even close to appropriate. Parent concerns go ignored and unanswered. If you expect to be respected as a parent and partner with your local school, this is not the school for you. Instead, the school expects parents to fundraise and then keep quiet. The teachers are nice and well-meaning, but the curriculum is old and boring. The administration stripped the school of advanced math for 4th and 5th grades, so students excelling in math sit in class, and do nothing, while students who struggle in math get extra help. The school reads older books like "Penny Reeds Doll" but then doesn't take their students to visit the Donner Memorial Museum. And an English teacher at back-to-school night actually called reading "boring". What is that?!! My students have made nice friends and don't seem to know the difference, so their ignorance is bliss. But as a parent new to the district, and used to a responsive and caring teaching and administration staff, I am appalled. Nevada City School District has gone WAY downhill. It is time for new leadership!

Have you ever heard of a teacher who takes regular vacation days to go away for a long weekend? Not us. That happens here. Have you heard of a teacher who doesn't speak proper English? Happens here. What about the mask-wearing mandate when Covid was still killing? Eh, loosely followed until teachers caught it. They took it more seriously after that. Have you ever heard of a school that doesn't call the parents when their child is the subject of bullying over sexual orientation? Happens here. Have you ever heard of a school that doesn't keep track of 10 year olds participating in after school activities? Lets them wander off campus day after day, even when they've been warned that this is happening? Happens here!! Fortunately the area offers charter schools, so you have options. Seven Hills is not for us.

This is a solid school with good, dedicated teachers, and an experienced and well respected, approachable principal (Sam Schug, since I think 2015). I’ve seen staff work really hard during the pandemic to reach and teach our children and have great respect for their efforts.

Horrible teacher-student relationships, no supportive resources of any kind, frequent bullying/ teasing/ fighting (from peers and teachers!), unnecessary discipline, and ovverall a hell hole for your kid and yourself!
