Hi,I'm a former student and my education in math was entirely neglected. The english, history, and music teachers were the only ones who provided a competent education. I now attend a top university, but that was entirely on my own merit. You'd think that since the class sizes are so small that administration would care about you, but you'd think wrong. Administration passes the blame around on who's fault it is that the school is so incredibly homophobic, transphobic, and ableist. You'd also think that since over 50% of the upper-school is LGBTQ+, that they'd respect those identities, but you'd be wrong again. They create whole policies based on a dislike of one student and restrict everything students try to do to better the school. In conclusion, if your child is a cisgender straight white neurotypical man then Millwood would be great for you. But if you're not, you'd be better off putting your kid in the public schools.

The Administrative staff at Millwood is not what you would expect from a private school with $17,450-$19,200 tuition. The teacher turnover rate is alarming every single year, and some of the educators hired don't come across qualified to be teaching students. The Middle school principal is another example of staff that seems unqualified. She’s unresponsive to student and parents concerns, and never seems to have the students best interest in mind. It broke my heart when I asked my child what was the most disappointing experience at Millwood the past two years, and the response was.. Lack of help and concern from principal that assisted with clubs and other activities. The students did not feel supported and were regularly discouraged when issues went unresolved. Millwood does a poor job accommodating advanced learners, and highly motivated students in middle and upper school. They are behind public school, and other private schools in the Richmond area. Confidence and enthusiasm fades each year, and it’s telling when around 90% of the 8th grade class will not be returning next school year.

My child attended 3 years at Millwood. The last two years were very disappointing in several areas. Poor leadership at the middle and upper school, particularly the Principal. Overall low morale, zero field trips, lack of enrichment activities, and clubs are a joke. Millwood felt more like a very small public school or Charter School from the 80’s or 90’s. The school needs major improvements and revival to match the tuition.

I was very dissatisfied with the IB program at this school. Some of the children that are in the program really shouldn't be. The test scores were low and they have been giving open notebook tests? Please be sure your child is not doing open notebook quiz/tests. Children need good study habits! I was shown some texting from students in middle school and the language was unreal. The language is used in the school too? The bullying is there too so please listen to your child when they mention that to you. I spoke with a grandmother that was in tears because of the way her grandchild was treated and nothing was done. The school is very expansive and needs a stricter leadership for bullying. Please consider another private school for middle school.

The reviews given that have 5 stars are written by parents who have elementary school children. And the lower school is very good and nurturing. My children’s success which led to two prestigious colleges was not w/out a hard fight to get the classes needed which are all online b/c the school does not offer advanced education. All online classes come at the parent’s expense on top of tuition. We know of upper school students taking up to 4 classes online. AP classes are mediocre here. My children studied w/a private tutor at our expense to learn multiple languages-this school again only offers limited educational opportunities. IB program is only until 10th grade which does nothing for them. 11th and 12th grades are forgotten about.

Millwood is a school with a nurturing environment that fosters learning. The teachers are engaged and care about the success of their students. Recently, Millwood has implemented the IB program in grades 6-10 and now offers many unique international opportunities to students. The high school offers many AP courses, including the Capstone, and seniors matriculate to prestigious colleges.

Millwood is a wonderful school. Students enroll for an individualized experience that you can’t get in the public school system. The teachers help bring out the best in the students by enhancing their skills and pushing them to their potential. As a parent, I am grateful to this school in its dedication to education and having a unique approach to learning. You will not regret exploring Millwood. It has so much to offer!

Personal Experience: If you donate a lot of money, work here and have a lot of money then you will get treated well. The administration is fake and doesnt fix any issues like bullying. If you want your child to be bullied then this is the place for your child. The teachers are rude and passive aggressive and there is a huge bullying problem no one is willing to fix.

My child went for a few years but we weren’t really happy. It’s too expensive for what you get. The resources aren’t great and there are not enough kids to have a decent athletics program. They advertise that they work with all different types of learners and levels but that’s not actually true.

Our experience has been amazing. We chose the school based off the tenured of the teachers and their warm approach to learning. The school focuses on character building and public speaking really help to build children who are not only book smart, but kind humans! I love the small class sizes and the ability for a child to work at their own pace and learn at their ability! We enrolled both of our children in the JK program and have seen so much growth since starting with Millwood.

Exceptional! We have LOVED our experience at Millwood. Our son attends 1st grade and we definitely plan to send our daughter. We selected Millwood for its reputation of offering small class sizes and high caliber instruction taught to the individual abilities of each child. They have surpassed our expectations. My son excels in math but struggles a bit in other areas. Within his one class, he is able to work up to his abilities in Mathematics and yet still receive the additional attention he needs elsewhere. The same is true for his classmates. They all have different strengths and weakness, but Mrs. Zehrer is able to give each child exactly what they need to succeed. It certainly helps that there are only 9 children in my son's 1st grade class. : -)

We have been at the school for 4 years. We have been very happy both with the education and character building that Millwood has offered out daughters. There is a sense of community and a very active parent/family group. We would highly recommend you come and check out our school.

Just attended a coffee and conversation with the Head of School yesterday. The topic was technology and it's impact on children. The school offered tips and suggestions, data and facts and how they plan to help our families combat the pitfalls of constant technology. I love that the school takes a wider view on how they can help my family--not just my child but my entire family. Grateful I found this gem of a school and community.

Millwood partners with parents, promotes moral values, respect and kindness to all, and most importantly, is not constrained to a curriculum that teaches to a standardized test. Academics are rigorous, interesting, and allow for creativity. Teachers are an extension of your family and they truly know your child. This school is an undiscovered gem and worth every penny!!

Our children have attended Millwood School for the past 6 years and are getting ready to return shortly. We are very pleased with the education they have received. Millwood is a gem of a school which stresses both academic achievement as well as character. Our children are able to introduce themselves to others, including adults with confidence and carry on a conversation. They have been taught essential life skills with the Big Ten that will serve them well throughout their entire careers. They are not scared of public speaking as they have been placed in front of a microphone from the moment they arrived at Millwood School. Children of different ages are teamed up with buddies. Many activities are performed with their buddy which are mutually beneficial whether it is practicing reading out loud to a junior kindergarten student, traveling to the "Amazon" observing the wildlife of the rainforest, playing games, or doing crafts. The small classes allow for lots of 1:1 instruction. The teachers are very approachable and aware of their students' needs. A minor incident occurred to our child by two other children that needed to be addressed. The head of the Lower School called me personally, explained the situation so that I would know about it before our child came home from school. Both other children's parents were contacted and the children apologized in person to our child. In addition, our child received a written apology from one child and the other child's father called my husband to apologize for his son's behavior. The issue was promptly and appropriately addressed and all three children are friends still. We are warmly greeted by all staff and other parents. Our children feel very safe and at home at Millwood School.

Millwood School has provided a top notch education for my son. In addition to his other academic achievements, he has learned critical thinking skills and developed strong public speaking skills. Maybe most importantly, Millwood has reinforced strong values including sportsmanship, citizenship, understanding and compassion. The BIG TEN that Millwood teaches is critical to the development of a good citizen of our community. Millwood School gets 5 Stars from me!

Millwood School has been a wonderful answer for us and is a special community to be part of. The small class size doesn't allow our son to hide in the crowd and the teachers and staff are amazing. They get to know every child and their personality as much as their classwork, pushing them to be successful in academics as well as in character. Character development at Millwood is strongly emphasized and an integral part of the curriculum, which we believe will be key in his success. It may not be the biggest school, but I truly believe its small size is a huge advantage and makes it one of the best schools around.
