This has been the absolute worse experience. Ever since my child started this school in the middle of 6th grade (transferred from Sutherland), he has cried and had multiple mental breakdowns. The teachers are EXTREMELY rude and degrade the students. I am stressed out regularly due to frustration of teachers not putting in grades, so my son is getting F's, although I can see that he turned the work in. The teachers do not communicate with parents or email them back. My niece attends the school as well and her mother is having the same experience. I do not recommend! Save yourself and your child the headache and stress!

Great school if you want your child to have a good future

Horrible. School district 159 has a lot of house cleaning to do. Instead of punishing their students, they need to have better process and procedures for whom they hire.

I have had two girls complete their grade school education at Colin Powell. It has helped both of them be successful in high school and one has recently graduated from college. The teachers and coaches there still keep in contact with my daughters and provide support to us as needed. It really does feel like an extended family and I'm happy to support them in any way I can.

I am a community member as well as had 2 kids graduate from here and 2 kids that will be coming to Colin Powell in the next 2 years. All I will say is this school is one of the best within its area. I have heard so many bad stories about other schools my friends kids go to but for this school to be majority black kids, this school is great! These kids are respectful, they all wear uniforms here. It looks so nice from the outside, you may see the school while youre on interstate 57 between Vollmer Road and Lincoln Highway. My son and daughter and raved about some of the teachers in that school. They love Mr. Moffett for gym, Mr. Dubose for Math because they said they have so much disclipline and don't take any mess but if you do what youre suppose to do they have fun with you sometimes and they have learned a lot from them as well on how to be black men in life. My son really looks up to those 2 teachers. My daughter loved Mrs. Foley and Mr. Mkwanawi. Mr Moffett coached my daughter and they had a good season that year. This school has a couple good teachers and a pretty good Principal as well because I have talked to her a couple times with a couple problems and she ironed it out.

Worse school possible in the suburbs....racist towards whites and Hispanics. Kids are mean and staff members are no better. The teachers change students grades for the better so they look like they are doing their job.

This school is truly incredible... I've been in Colin Powell since 6th grade an it's been an enjoyable experience... I represent the class of 2014 in Colin Powell and I can say that I saw many people crying and many sad farewells as everyone left the building going on to bigger things... The last day of school was a moment to remember for all... Autograph signings... exchanging info to meet over the summer and saying bye to all those who will no longer be apart of your life... I know this seems like I'm only talking about my 8th grade experience but every grade expects the same amount of hard work and the rewards get bigger every year... This school has many after school and extra curricular activities to partake in.... Like every school it has its ups an downs every year like fights and school drama... Every school does!!! I'm not here saying that this is the perfect school because it's not, but it was the school for me and 8th grade was the best year of my life... It will be hard but in the end very rewarding... From Flaming Hot Fridays to Research Reports.. This school is Great!!! Mrs. Johnson is makes everyone school year more enjoyable!

This is my daughters first year here. And she was so nervous the first day. The ladies in the front office were so nice to us and was very helpful on the first day. Whn my daughter got home she said she loved it and couldn't wait to go back the next day. Thanks!

Colin Powell is a wonderful school. Two of my children have attended the school and the teachers in all the grades are top notch. They are prompt in their response in dealing with and resolving issues. I am very pleased with the impact the school has been having on my sons.
