We love this school so much that, while we are considering an out-of-town move, we are also considering commuting the half hour it would take to bring the kids back here. NYE has a fantastic anti-bullying program, teachers who really get down on the kids' levels, support staff that go above and beyond their on-paper duties, and the parent community is spectacular. NYE has a strong support system in its surrounding neighborhood, and thus teaches kids a lot about what it means to be involved as a caring community member. The history of the school (Langston Hughes went here), and the community involvement are what lured us in. The teachers' very real care for the children and the fun and challenges have kept us here.

I have worked with New York school for several years as a LEAP business partner, substitute teacher, and also served on their site council. Subsequently, I have a good idea about the school's workings, teaching methods, structure and students' learning. Parents are supportive of their child's learning. The atmosphere is one of friendliness and old-fashioned learning traits for performance excellence,

New York school is an amazing school because of everyone there. The community has saved it from being shut down by budget cuts...the parents are involved and care deeply, the shcool is diverse and teaches respect and care of others. Many people work very hard to keep New York school running and to just keep it open right now! Please help New York school, this school is not in the higher income part of town, yet the heart of the school is big. I love New York school.

This is one of the only neighborhood schools left in Lawrence by a school board obsessed with leaving the east side of Lawrence to deteriorate in favor of schools that will make nonwalkers more comfortable. All the faculty here are veteran teachers, and make do with supplies left over from better funded schools. An amazing, historic school.
