My family has had an amazing experience at Luther Elementary. The Principal, Mrs. O’Leary is a phenomenal leader. The teachers are outstanding and provide an incredible learning environments and demonstrated inclusivity to all students. I love the diversity of cultures of the students who attends Luther.

This is a great school, I have had my children and my grandchildren attend. they all loved it. Recently the school was remodeled as a technology school.I has one of the highest test scores in our district.

RESPONSE TO COMMENT: Steven Luther School- Not a good neighbor. For many decades. In reference to this comment I just wanted to say that the school this parent is referring to is actually Swain Elementary. The Cypress School District has been using this closed campus (Sawin) for the others schools in the Cypress School District to use during the remodeling process of their school for the year. I do agree that the campus is not in the best shape, but its old and its a previously closed school being used temporarily until all schools are remodeled and the district decides what to do with the campus. This campus is also, much nicer than the old Dickerson campus which has been previously used in the past too. Luther is a wonderful school. Everyone there seems to know each other and the principle makes a good effort to gain a personal relation ship with each child she can, and try's to get to know the parents also. It's a small school compared to the other schools, but it gives you a private school like feeling when it come to parent, teacher, principle communication. And now they are home with their remodeled school on La Palma and Del Amo (Moody)

I've lived in the area for years and just switched my child from a private school to Luther. I had heard nothing but good feedback from friends and neighbors. Had a choice between Morris and Luther and choose Luther. We love it. The principle is wonderful. The teacher is amazing! All the staff is friendly. The only thing, coming from a private school so were used to tons of homework, they don't get much here but it's nice not being buried in it and now we can do it on our own timing no rushing to get it completed. We are at piece with our decision. Kids are nice and she loves it! We're very happy there! Take a tour before judging. You'll love it too! Sunshiney days!

Steven Luther School- Not a good neighbor. For many decades, this property was not being maintained and was not a happy school for the kids. Yes, in 2012 school went thru a retro period. The property compounds is still below industry standards. The rear of the compounds sits a large park for the hoods to play in. Now the school districts has made this a closed campus and shut out the park to residents. Here sit acres and acres of non used parkland, which is being poorly maintained and non usable, as gates are locked. City of La Palma does not have many neighborhood parks and now in 2013, this school park is closed to all residents. School board trustees have created a non happy environment for our local residents. Front of the school is not compatible for the street scape, as is a sea of concrete and asphalt jungle. Adj. to west of compounds, sits a retirement community for affordable homes, which are locked out too.

I think the school needs to provide field trips and hand-on projects. Also less time off in Sumer and more time off at Christmas .

Unfortunately we moved from Virginia where the budgeting was much greater and put well to use. Although I knew that going in I was still very disappointed with the overall atmosphere and attention to each child. The class sizes are WAY too full. My child's teacher specifically (a First grade teacher) seemed entirely exhausted all of the time and left my child feeling completely saddened at his experience from kinder to first. She constantly singled him out in front of his peers and acted as though she was always "fed" up with 5 or 6 kids in the class. Im just bummed and am even taking him out of the class to an entirely different school. Personally I like Mrs. Teschke (the principal) she is warm, knows all of the children's names and definitely seemed more invested in my child than his OWN TEACHER. How sad. Anyway... they are currently at an interim site which is run down and gross. Next year should be better but along with the site, they need to take some inventory of the teachers and perhaps restructure that side of things as well.

Steve Luther School is no longer the great school it used to be under Ms. Beatty s leadership. The change of principal and the influx of students from other schools in the district after the shut-down of two district schools have significantly impacted the quality of education at Luther. After the change, my kids felt they were no longer academically challenged and the material being taught in class was too simplistic and repetitive. I tried to approach the principal, but she was not open-minded or ready for any suggestions. We switched our kids to another school this school year and are very happy that we did that. The recent OC elementary school ranking by OC Register puts Luther at 350 out of 379 schools for academics - the bottom 10 percentile. It is sad to watch the deterioration of such a great school.
