This school is run prison-style. The kids are assigned seats everywhere they go, even at lunch. They have to be granted permission to get up to get a napkin or get up at all from their assigned table. The teachers are sub-par from our experience. 3rd grade was decent, 4th grade has been a nightmare- newer teachers that have no clue how to communicate or get organized. There was a mass exodus of teachers which is also red flag. Lastly, this school is VERY focused on academics and very strict and serious, much like the middle school it feeds, River Trail. If you want your child to have more balance and be able to have a more “normal” school life, I would not recommend this school. Also, the demographic and school focus at home is why the school ranks so high for test scores. It is not the teachers and school structure.

I’m my opinion the school is a little over rated. I think the kids should be able to have a normal child hood. I think to have a diverse school the staff should be a reflection this diversity. How many minorities do the school and the district employ as educators?

No doubt this is an amazing school in great location. This is adjacent to river trail middle school. I love the location. I feel it's the most safe place for kids . School is diverse and teachers are great . If you give preference to academics this is the best school in north Atlanta . Thou there are Sebe real upcoming schools is Forsyth I personally feel Fulton county school system is the best and mature with several gifted programs .

I am surprised to see why shakerag didn't receive 10 points . I would say this is the best school in north Fulton. Only issue I found is Asian population is quite high and emphasis on more on academics . Besides this feeds river trail , which is the best middle school in this region.

I feel like so much pressure is put on kids when they go to this school. Not necessarily by the teachers, but other students and their parents. Most of the kids go to Kumon etc. after school just so their parents can "be proud" and state how advanced their children are ("My son is 2 years above grade level in math etc). On the other hand when you see a 2nd grader not knowing how to ride a bicycle even with training wheels is sad! At one point I asked my child's friend about her 4 day weekend - all she was able to remember was "working on math sheets". Quite often, the advanced kids like to show off and put down the kids that are "just" on level. I am perfectly fine with my children being just where they should be. It is not that I don't want them to excel - I just want them to have good childhood. Playing sports, taking trips etc. School is important but being well rounded individual too. Overall I think the teachers are good. It is the parents of the students that are pushing the teachers. How many times I heard them complaining that their son/daughter is not being challenged etc. Look at it this way - if their kid completes all online study materials (IXL) for the upcoming year over summer break, no wonder teachers are having difficulties to accommodate every single kid and his/her parent. I think this school sets the standard high. Kids get good education at this school. However, the unhealthy competition among kids (starts at kindergarten) is not a good thing. We are not talking ab math prodigies here, we are talking ab kids that started going to Kumon at the age of 5 so they can rapidly advance (not so they can catch up, or keep up, but to intentionally get several grades ahead).

Best school ever! Great admin team, amazing teachers and wonderfully diverse students. They challenge students without focusing on test prep or worrying about test scores.

My daughter absolutely loves Shakerag! It's very diverse, which is one thing as a parent that I love, but the staff and students are all so genuinely nice and warm!

Poor academic school. No math homework. Home access not updated. My son in third grade. I don't see any improvement from school. I don't know bcoz of the new teacher. BuT I see the school does nothing to work to improve academic. The kids take extra outside class Kumon.. But the principal please step up and improve the academic improvement. We like the surrounding but school need to improve in curriculum and teaching and communicating with the parents. Please Have only good experienced new teachers

My husband and I did alot of research before choosing our home, and bought this one simply because it was in the Shakerag Elementary district. I could not ask for a better experience for my children! I work closely with the principal and have found him to care deeply about the well-being and education of the children. All the best teachers try to get in to Shakerag, so we have yet to have a bad experience. My children have fun, but the expectation for their education and behavior is still high. They actually MISS SCHOOL when we are on vacation:) The PTA is very prevalent and I am pleasantly surprised by how many parents are involved. I also love the racial diversity. My children's best friends are Kenyan, German, English, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Syrian...its been a wonderful education for us on its own. You absolutely will not regret sending your kids to Shakerag!

Shakerag is possibly one of the best schools in the country The principal is terrific, as are most teachers. The school has a fantastic family atmosphere, even if it serves an incredibly diversified public with many very intelligent students, and parents. We have 2 children in the school, and feel lucky with this school.

I am giving this school only 3 stars because, while my child is learning in the classroom, some of the ladies who run the drop-off and pick-up line are inattentive and rude.
