Overall the school is awesome. They lean into new technology and are always testing new teaching methodologies. The fifth grade teachers each have their own passion (eg one teacher teaches all 4 fifth grade classes science, a different one teaches all 4 history). Their passion then comes through in the material. The parents are highly involved which is great.

I have had 3 children go through this school, with my last leaving after this year. Over the years I have seen a decline in quality of education. The school is overcrowded. Some teachers are really great, others seem to manipulate grades and testing to show growth. Principals come and go from this school every couple years. I heard the new principal seems nice but she never sent out an introduction letter to parents so I don't know much about her. Her bio on the school website mostly pushes the PTA's fundraisers so they can build a new playground. Which brings me to the annoyance of nonstop fundraisers where the PTA is constantly is digging in your wallet. I'm glad our time here is done before things further decline.

I debated if I should write my opinion of this school because overall, it really has been decent but here it goes....I have two kids who are nearing the end of their time at this school. One is "twice exceptional" (Can be challenging to engage) and one is very typical.PROSThe new principal (who is now leaving) is challenging the teachers and parents to "think outside the box" a bit. He also managed the increased growth well despite poor planning by the county and city. The teachers - this is mostly a pro. Most are experienced and caring. The new teachers are a breath of fresh air and seem to already have good classroom mgt. skills. The specials teachers are also very good.CONSMost of the teachers my kids have had are very good at handling "typical" kids. I have had a night and day experience between kids. Few teachers have truly attempted to understand my twice exceptional child while my typical child has thrived. My first child is rarely acknowledged or recognized while my second has on occasion received "student ambassador" etc. Finally, there is heavy emphasis on test scores.I am sorry I ever fed into these numbers.Your child of course knows how important these results are to the school and thus, feels the stress. In a nutshell, I've realized that it is up to me as a parent to bridge any gaps in their education.I have taken a step back as far as expectations go of this school or any school.

Ms. Merrit, the kindergarten teacher was amazing. Firm in expectations of the students, yet completely gentle and understanding. Just the right mix to get my wiggly little guy to be the best he could be. Turned him into a great student who understood the rules and loved reading. Parents are very involved. Tons of volunteers. Even the substitute I saw on one day that I volunteered really knew what she was doing. Then again we had Ms. Price at the beginning of the year temporarily and she was just ok. Overall the new principal Mr. Smith seems to really care. Same goes with the Vice Principal. My son had one issue that occurred and she understood that what he said was not his true character, he just didn't understand the gravity of what he said and what it meant. I'm glad they took the appropriate action and thought it was handled both according to procedure and yet in a way that wasn't over the top. Students are great too. My son has lots of new friends from great families with good values.

West Woods is a top-notch school! You can see they have excelling test scores, but that s not all that makes this an awesome school. The teachers and staff are very friendly and make a sincere effort to partner with parents in educating students. Our children have gotten a fantastic education at WWE, and all of their academic and social/emotional needs are met as well. We have one child on an ALP and one on an IEP, and both are excelling at WWE. I cannot say enough about the caring involvement of many professionals that have made our children s school experience so positive. We love West Woods!

Overall it's been an ok ride at West Woods. Great parent involvement and the extra curricular activities are wonderful. I agree with a few other posts that the front office staff has little to be desired. They constantly have an attitude and are just overall rude, especially the one with short hair. New principle seems to have an attitude too, hopefully that will turn around. He has big shoes to fill, I hope he can do it. The bottom line is it's a good place for the kids.

I think the school is very good overall. Academics are strong, teachers tend to be very good, there are plenty of activities for kids. Expectations seem to have increased a lot in the three years between our kids, which is a mixed blessing. Class sizes are too big, individual attention from the teachers varies, and there is not enough time or energy for the teachers to explain and teach everything, so they send home things for the parents to teach to the kids. Our kids occasionally complained about disruptive kids in classes, some are probably kids who should be in special schools. But in the end the kids seem to be learning a lot, the social environment is positive, the PTSA works great, and most teachers we have had were either good or excellent - we have not encountered bad teachers yet. The current principal seems to be doing a very good job at keeping the school standards high.

I've done my research and will have to agree Westwoods is a great school. The front office could use a refresh as the front desk ladies don't appear to like their jobs as they are unfriendly and not helpful. They do not give a good first impression.
