I'm a Hispanic parent of 2 Whiting High school students and one graduate. Not once have my kids or I experienced any form of belittle or racism. On the contrary we were very well accepted when we arrived in 2008. I have a son with a learning disability and I have his teachers cell phone numbers incase I have a concern or question. Excellent parent and teacher communication. If your kid acts like a fool and tries to disrespect YES the administration will put an immediate stop and will not tolerate any kind of disrepect. There are very few schools like Whiting where they begin to teach about respect and no tolerance. When is the last time you heard of a tragedy inside of a Whiting school.

Whiting High School is FANTASTIC learning environment! Everyone has a chance for success. Our teachers take extra time if we don't understand something. Our classes are academically challenging. We have a lot of extra curricular and art programs. Our school is small and sweet.

I was so disappointed to see such bad reviews. My child attended a private school for 7 years in Whiting and when we gave Portage (we live there) middle schools a chance, I knew I had to put my son back into a small school environment. We are Hispanic and have NEVER been discriminated in any way. I truly appreciate the staff, as well as the students there. There is a level of respect for each other. The school may not have all the up to date amenities but it is worth my 30 minute commute. Whiting High School not only offers a safe environment, but the school doesn't have a huge drug or pregnancy problem like the surrounding schools.

Whiting is obviously not Munster or any of those big schools so why does everyone compare our school to them? The simpliest why to describe whiting is a nice small town school, very strict (unless youre cool with the staff or somehow related to them) , some good and bad teachers (most of which should no longer be on the payroll considering their teaching abilities), and basically in this town it's all about who you know, what click you're in, whos ur family,& if you're white. And if youre not the last thing i mentioned then you have to try your hardest to show that you belong, get good grades, don't think outside the box (not recommended unless you like being sent to the office) , & control your temper when you miss out on things because some electives require connections...did I mention that they have a great variety of food? Just no fries or salt lol

This school can be ok, but will never you will not recieve the education you can get in Valparaiso, Munster, or Crown Point. You have to push your child above and beyond what the school requires, because the school just has to spend too much time with the kids that aren't passing the ISTEP tests and that is their focus. Your kid can play sports because they are always hurting for kids to go out. All in all it is ok, certainly better than the Hammond schools and the E.C. and Gary schools, but do not expect anything better than that.

This school frowns upon children that are not in the click at Whiting HS. You either need to be in a click, or you are not looked at for anything. There are quite of bit high school politics and it is not fair for the ones that deserve a recognition. Yet, become a coach at Whiting, your child will definitely be able to play the sport even if your child doesn't meet the athletic ability, but make sure you don't sit out the good ones, you will definitely keep the losing streak for WHS unless your child is one of the best athletic there. To be quite frank, if I intend to have children again, I would definitely not send my child there. The academics are not at a high standards for college preparation. I most certainly wish I had never sent my child there.
