My son is in second grade. The child doesn’t understand what school is outside of Covid. Kindergarten abruptly stopped for two weeks, which turned into not returning. First grade was a hodge podge of virtual here, in person there, back to virtual. That being said, he has still had a wonderful experience at WES - in my opinion, the best one could have given the circumstances. Mr. Zellmer, the principal, greets the children outside every morning at carpool. He is always so kind, and it is so reassuring to see that in a principal. I recall that he used to be a kindergarten teacher, and I think that instilled a lot of the values he possesses that makes him such a successful principal. I had concerns about the time children were allotted to eat at lunch a couple of years ago, and he handled it promptly. I have no doubt that he cares for each and every child. My child’s teachers have all been amazing too, and each year, I have felt blessed because his teachers have gone above and beyond, truly cared for the students, and communicated with me about any concerns, etc.

I’ve had 3 kids go through WES, 2 are still attending. We have received support for our kids academically. WES strongly supports the arts as well which has been a great outlet for a lot of students. We love this school and it’s community.

I have 2 children who attend Wendell Elementary. I have been pleased with everything about this school since my oldest was in Kindergarten. Even with changes in administration and staff, the school remains a welcoming and supportive place for all learners. I was so proud to see we earned the title of School of Excellence again! Wendell is a wonderful school with excellent teachers who work hard to build relationships with each of their students.

The teachers and staff care, which, too me, is super important. My kid has done well and thrives at Wendell Elementary.

The school is wonderful! I have to thank Mr Barham for the automated reminder calls he sends out, those calls are so helpful, sometimes I can't keep track of all the paper work sent home! Recently I received a call to tell us that the next day students should wear orange (against bullying), and had I not gotten that call I wouldn't have remembered. Whether the kids need help in catching up with something (my K'er is starting speech therapy), or to be pushed a bit harder with something (my older son was just placed in math enrichment) they are there to help! I am glad to know the teachers take notice of things like this and work to help kids in different areas. The teachers are great, the few times I've emailed them with a question, they were quick to respond! I think the PTA could be a bit more active with things like bake sales, raffles, movie night, yankee candle sales or even good ol' chocolate bar sales. We don't have any friends or family interested in buying from that 'candy man' catalogue they send home. I also think they should push the school clothing and car magnets a bit more. Overall we are happy with this school and all of the faculty in it!

Wendell Elementary is a wonderful school with staff and teachers who want the very best for the students. Wendell is a Creative Arts and Science Magnet school and does a great job of integrating science and the arts into every aspect of learning. When you walk into the building you can see learing happening everywhere! I am proud to be a part on the Wendell Elementary family!

We are a school located in eastern Wake County. We have a higher population of free and reduced lunch students so we are also a Title 1 school. This in no way deters our teachers and staff from making this school the best it can be, producing students who strive to achieve on every level. However, due to the poorer part of the population of Wake County living in the smaller communities outside of Raleigh, we have less school funding that is given to us. Watching TVs from the 1980's and struggling with technology due to newer schools being built and improvements in schools in other parts of the county that don't struggle, it's hard to want so much for such a great staff because they deserve to have the same teaching tools as every other teacher in Wake County. Please consider given this money to the school to help improve the technology at this school which has been the mission of the PTA for the last couple of years - donate as much money as possible to the technology funding for improvements at Wendell Elementary. Our principal, Shane Barham, is a former teacher here and understands the needs. I know he will put this money to the best use for the school!!

This school does the best it can with the tools it has been given. The school s positive attributes include the school leadership, interesting opportunities the kids can partake in for the arts and leadership and small school size. I would say the biggest negative is low parental involvement. This is a Title I school and so you get kids from all walks of life, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. Whether your child is beyond the subject matter or needs extra help, the school offers options for both.
