Don't walk - RUN from this school.Academics: School is overwhelmed with the English-second language kids. Teachers can not keep up and only pay attention to the kids that are severely behind.Teachers: there are several STAR teachers that makes all the difference. But the majority of the teachers are below average at best and there only to collect the paycheck. Administration: this is where the real problem is. The Principle does not care and that cascades down to the teachers. Issues are being swept under the rug, no communication, 0 transparency. Hard working teachers are not being encouraged/rewarded. Low preforming teachers get no support or encouragements to better themselves. Behavioral: saying curse words in the class in front of the teacher would NOT get you to the principle office. Violence ( hitting, punching, verbal) is a "normal" thing for this school.Bullying: is a daily occurrence in the school. Lunch time, play time and bus are the most common areas. There is next to no supervision ( "I did not see it" is a frequent statement from the teachers aid), no transparency. I would not recommend this school and can not wait till we leave it.

Great experience so far! Our daughter just finished kindergarten and we are looking forward to another great 5 years at Liberty.

Our son attended a private school in Westchester last year, so we were a bit skeptical about enrolling him at a public school. That said, Liberty Elementary for us has been MUCH BETTER than even the private school. The school has some of the best teachers, who are not only immensely qualified and experienced, but also very very caring. School has a great PTA, an amazing community feeling at every event. While this is already a Blue Ribbon school, we would rate it 6 out of 5 stars. This is the only elementary school in Nyack school system that offers exclusive hispanic education and hence at times overall scores based on 'test averages' are low. We are confident this would be a 10/10 school once students from all demographics score equally! Go Liberty!

We removed both our children from this school. Our daughter began suffering almost immediately from mysterious headaches and stomach aches - very typical stress response from children. As the years went on, not only did it become worse, but her confidence plummeted. She ended her 3rd grade there convinced she was stupid and didn't need school. I addressed her teachers and the principal many times. What I learned and witnessed myself: 1) my daughter was punched, in the face, and sent to the nurse in first grade on the playground. Her teacher (no class teachers are present on the playground) was never notified. I found out from another student + parent who were worried. 2) Children were denied snack and special time for being "bad" or not bringing in homework and sat, alone, on the circle carpet in front of the whole class as to make an example of them. 3) Teachers not allowing questions during class, unless they invite the children to ask.4) A teacher screaming in a child's face, as she loomed over him, and his body pressed agains the wall - in front of the class and all who were walking by. "I AM SO SICK OF YOU!!! WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM! I"M SO SICK OF YOU!!" My experience is that there were some lovely teachers at this school, but we didn't have a single one of them, and there are many teachers who are burnt out and managing their class through punitive measures, intimidation and humiliation. My opinion is this is a culture that is created by the principal, who we found to be unaccessible, unhelpful with pre-scripted, robotic responses. We moved both our children and they are absolutely thriving now in a different school. If you believe education is about critical thinking, nurturing a love a learning and curiosity, growing confident voices and resilient spirits - you may not be happy at this school.

Liberty Elementary is a great school for children. It is filled with friendly and concerned teachers and staff. The PTA is very active in the school and they encourage parents to join in their child s education. My son was prepared for middle school and is doing well in his current grade. My daughter still attends and is very happy with her teachers.
