The students in their care are taken seriously and it's very clear that the staff understands the importance of working together. They don't have communication issues which is what I think makes their approach actually work.

3/10. I needed a safe place from home to heal and prepare for college. Summit was only successful in regards to not being home. The head staff member of my dorm was handsy with students and no one listened. Therapy was no more than staff checking boxes to cover them legally. I felt lucky because at least my therapist didn't tell others what we talked about in sessions, which was a common problem. We never discussed the past or coping mechanisms though. Classes were a similar farce. By the time I left I felt like my education had been taken from me. I saw an outside therapist during my last year there and that was my saving grace. I currently see this school as a necessary evil, but it could be so much more. The students just need to be made a priority.

as a former student, this school helped me from where I was when I came and helped shape me into a better person. However, the administration was horrible; staff were harsh and biased, rarely fair treatment for students, and when fights broke out between students, staff would get physical towards students. This school also did not in any way prepare me for college life.. they limited the amount of money we could carry to $10, the teachers never gave me homework, which screwed me when I got to college because college is a lot of homework. Overall, I would give this school a 4/10

As an highly intelligent African American male student with special needs in Manhattan's district 3 upper Westside, he was on the fast track to Rikers Island! In Summit school he's now on the fast track to the College of his choice... Priceless!!! They provided a safe place where he can learn, explore and take risks without fear of being labeled and discarded. Staff is AMAZING all from kitchen to teachers love their jobs! Can't fake that with super intuitive children. After a three yr legal battle with the DOE we were finally able to gain access to this school. Highly recommend this school!!!

I was routinely subject to long periods of isolation as a form of corrective punishment in this place. Resulting in a sense of social detachment well into my adulthood.

I would give my experience at this school a 6 out of 10. My Social Worker was rude and impatient. My teachers were the highlight of my year. My Cottage staff was respectful and kind. But my peers were rude, they excluded me and I felt overall disliked by the other girls. Even though i would go out of way to be caring, I never made a friend at that school.

My daughter attends Summit and it's been a positive experience for her. She's making great strides, and the staff seems to genuinely care.
