The administration is petty and biased as well as ableist. They clearly do not have the best interest of the kids at heart.

This school leaves something to be desired. Teacher-wise there are some gems, for example, Mrs. Merrill, Mrs. Peterre, Mrs. Marcum, Mr. Hinman, and Mrs. Tichnell. I can't speak on all of the guidance counselors, but if you have Mrs. Paul and she gets to know you, she is so incredibly helpful. Mr. Treen was the best principal, he built a great rapport with many students and you could really tell that he cared. He is now the principal at Tallmadge High School. Now for the some of the negatives of the school; a lot of their initiatives to help students felt very performative on the staff end of things, students have a good sense of who cares about them and their well-being. An incident that really stuck out was when the school did stuff for pride month. There was a student-led initiative to put up a pride flag and it was torn down. Although there were consequences for the student who tore it down, it was all very private which gave off the impression that the school was not discouraging students from doing such things. Additionally, when a gay teacher resigned from the school, the chalkboard in their classroom was vandalized with homophobic slurs and there were no messages sent out on remind to tell students that discriminatory and hateful behavior is not appropriate and that there will be repercussions for such behavior. There was nothing. That was incredibly disappointing coming from a school district that claims to be inclusive and that boasts slogans like "see something, say something" or that if you're a bystander, then you're just as bad as the people doing the wrong thing. The performative activism is something that is easy to come across in this world, but that does not mean that we should tolerate it and especially not from the place that is supposed to be modelling behavior for impressionable young students. If we allow it from our schools, then we allow it from our children. When I was a student here, I didn't have a say in what school I attended, but I hope that we change this school into a place that students can feel safe, cared for, and that can shape them not only into educated people, but more importantly, good people.

I'm an alumnus of SMFHS and can definitely say that I had a positive experience during my time here and was well-prepared for college. I took advantage of the many AP and Honors classes and found the teachers to be engaging and the courses challenging. Plenty of graduates matriculate at Ivy League and other competitive colleges (i.e., Northwestern, American, Carnegie Mellon) for undergraduate and graduate school, as well as excel at the local universities. The music and arts programs are excellent and the sports teams do well in the district. As long as you're willing to work hard, take initiative with your education, and get involved, you will absolutely be successful here and prepared for college/life after high school.

To make this short: For your kid's benefit, move to the Hudson, Aurora, or Brecksville-Broadview Hts. school district instead, if possible. Stow-Munroe Falls high school is full of drugs and lowlifes. They rarely clean the school and the staff are extremely mean to the students, and the guidance counselors refuse to help you with any scheduling problems. This school is so fixated on being "average" that they lose sight of the purpose that we are there for: academics and a great education. The regular classes are extremely easy and they refused to let me take any of the AP classes that I requested. They could care less about your future, discouraging academics and encouraging laziness (Yes, the Latin teacher played entertainment movies 3/5 of the days and the other classes rarely did any work). If you are content with your kid being an extremely lazy failure, then send them to SMFHS. I would never EVER send my children to such a rancid school district like Stow. However, there are still worse schools, such as the Akron and Cuyahoga Falls districts.
