The school is safe and facilities are fine but it’s a hit or miss with teachers here. I have a student that attended for three years. Here’s her experience year 1: teacher that yelled constantly year 2: teacher was absent frequently, substitutes covered;minimal learning Year 3: a new teacher that was unfamiliar with the grade levelThe new principal Kozel has added lots of rules and students are written up and threatened with “majors and minors” constantly and over petty things. I feel like the students would thrive with better leadership. Also, at assemblies and community events Spanish translation isn’t offered and there are many Spanish speaking parents that attend these events and left confused without language support.

We moved here from Missouri and my 2nd grader is doing work that my older kids didnt start until the end of 3rd grade in Missouri! They are very hard working teachers and they keep the kids interested and wanting to learn. My son loves the happy and friendly environment and comes home EVERY day excited anout what he learned in class. A + for Alice Shaw!

The new principal is only interested with getting more funding for the school by encouraging teachers to pass failing students to the next grade. The whole school is selective in terms racial make up of the student body. According to the school's accountability report, whites always score at least 25% than all the other minorities. My child of a different racial background is always labeled as the liar when involved in a dispute with a white student and sent to principal's office. The teachers are uncaring. The only caring staff are the lunch room ladies and the yard monitor ladies. I have decided to pull my child out of this school.

This used to be a great school prior to the budget cuts and the teacher pink slips and class size increases. I expect Alice Shaw's test scores will fall especially in the lower grades. The class sizes jumped from 20 to 33 students and even with volunteering in the classroom I personally felt many children were being left behind. The budget crisis has impacted Orcutt hard IMO. I have transferred out due to the lack of teaching and more focus on crowd control in the classroom.

I attribute a lot of my childrens success in school to the support and dedication of the Alice Shaw staff. Even though I have a bus stop right across the street from my house that would take my kids to another school I have chosen continue to drive to Alice Shaw because of the wonderful caring staff. My daughter is getting ready to graduate high school and attend college and I believe the education and support she received at Alice Shaw has helped her to see her goals and achieve them. I can see that my boys are getting that same education and support.
