My son transferred to this school in the middle of first grade because his previous school claimed we were out of district when we moved to our new home in the same town. The process was frustrating and confusing to say the least. I spent upwards of an hour trying to find the forms to transfer his records on their website. When I couldn't find them I called the front desk only to be told they didn't have an opening for him to transfer. I finally had to call the school board office and talk to someone that emailed the forms to me. Then the first Monday after Halloween I received a call from his teacher about his lunch. She told me that candy in his lunch bag was not healthy and that she would like to see healthier options. He had a turkey sandwich, carrot sticks, string cheese, crackers, a drink, and two bite size pieces of candy from his Halloween bag. First of all, my son is not overweight by any means and secondly, she has no say in what I feed my child. I was not the only parent she called about it and to ask all students not to eat candy after Halloween is ridiculous! Not to mention that she was wasting her time calling parents about lunch when she should be focusing on academics. Incidents like this happened all year with this teacher. The school itself was a joke! They required that ALL students wear a winter jacket, snow pants, gloves, hats, scarves, and snow boots to be able to play out on recess even when no snow was on the ground. My son's backpack already weighed 20+ pounds on a good day with all of the books and sports equipment he was hauling to and from school. He had to start carrying another bag just to make it easier to carry. Watching him walk to the car in the cross walk was painful to say the least! When spring finally came, my husband and I started to let my son walk a little further to the car to help him learn safety and responsibility. I could see him the entire walk from the school doors to my car. The first week I was forced to pick him up at the door because his teacher said it wasn't safe to walk that far. I tried to explain what was going on and she ignored me! I had to call the principal and explain the situation. He claimed he would talk to her about it. She called me to say that she was trying to make an example out of the situation for safety. Again, that was not her place! Best advice ever, stay away from this school!

The way certain things are handle ticked me off. All in all my son loves it here. I have contaminated pulling him out. Not anything with the school just half day kindergarten is hard on the family He begged to go back. Its like 8pm and he will have his backpack on ready for school. If I pick him up early he is bummed, if we drive by when school is not in session hes asking to go. When I picked him up this last time I asked how was school. He exclaimed I LOVE SCHOOL! When I drop him off he runs in like a wild animal excited. He is their best critic, and to say the least he gets allot of joy going to school at Highland. I just hope he is this excited about high school

This school is quality, complete, on task, perfectly aware! I'm not interested in what the "ratings" have to show. Academics are taken seriously and children would have trouble not excelling! Hooray for A. Dillon and his staff. A wonderful example of what a handful of caring, intelligent, driven people can accomplish!
