It is a good school yet the only problems I’ve noticed from students and staff alike is how truly degrading some students can be to others. The teachers like to make smart remarks to students, and the principal only seems to come up with more strict rules and guidelines every so often that only negatively affect my perception of this school. Instead of small things like cellular decides, why not focus on…hmm I don’t know, maybe how students like to damage and deface school property? Or how bullying isn’t effectively dealt with on campus? Or maybe how students will rarely but surely inappropriately interact/speak with one another that creates such an uncomfortable environment.

I was extremely concerned about my son attending a public school in Burke county ( we came from the Chapel Hill school system). Patton is beautiful, clean and has a visually inspiring environment. The teachers in the advanced classes ( AP; Honors) have been outstanding. They show dedication, knowledge and compassion for the students. More than one teacher has offered to tutor/coach my child in order for him to excel in exams, interviews, etc. Our guidance counselor, Traci Riggsbee, has been a blessing. She coached us through each year and made excellent suggestions to insure college readiness. Of particular note, my son stated that there was not one single incident of bullying that he was aware of in the years he attended. Well done, Patton, well done.

The comment written below is making statements that are simply false. "the first African American Football Coach was greeted with racial slurs" is absolutely untrue. The student and parents at Patton welcomed this coach with open arms. Any negative reaction to his arrival at the school is due to the constant changing of football coaches over the years. There was no racism from the Patton community and they gave nothing but support. Patton and Freedom are both phenomenal schools, although the many community members view Patton as the academic high school and Freedom as the athletic high school. However, Patton has many successful sports team and Freedom test scores are excellent. The comment below is from a community member who feels that tearing Patton down will in turn build Freedom up. Patton provides students with exceptional educational opportunities, a positive and safe environment, and an amazing sense of school spirit and pride.

Patton is an OK High school - only average really. Almost all the teachers came from Freedom High (the sister school to Patton in Morganton). Those teachers were good at Freedom, and they continue to do a good job at Patton. There is a rumor that Patton is "a better school" than Freedom, but statistics don't bear that out. Example: US News and World Reports ranks Freedom higher than Patton (#32 to #43 in North Carolina) even though Freedom has a greater range of socio-economic indicators (more ethnic diversity; larger percentage of economically disadvantaged; etc.). Where I rate Patton High below average is it has a past history of racism (the first African American Football Coach was greeted with racial slurs and epithets spray painted on the buildings and football field; also several football players refused to play on the team - at least initially, they did not give any reasons, but the spray paint on the field spoke volumes). If you want a school with less diversity (and no more academic advantages than Freedom) then Patton is the place for you.

I think RLPHS is a great school! The teachers care a lot about our educations and push us to do our best at all times. The band program in particular at Patton is great! I love going here!

The reviews (from 2008) about strict rules/guidelines for the students was accurate at that time but is definitely MUCH improved now! Since the (much needed!) change in leadership, this is a wonderful school! The administration is great & communicates well & the students really seem to enjoy the school! They really provide a super safe environment for the students & a HUGE emphasis is placed on academics....even the (new) football coach holds a mandatory 'Study Hall' prior to practices & has consequences for players that are not applying themselves acedemically. There is a multitude of opportunities to help prepare the students for college.
