Our children have thrived at Naples. Even though they have different learning styles, the teachers we have encountered try to tailor engagement to the most effective style for my kids. I can see how some parents/kids might struggle here if their child is well below grade level and don’t have time to supplement or seek targeted improvement, as the teachers we have met with all strive to achieve above grade level goals for all students (this is not a complaint from me AT ALL). It’s as close to a public “private” school as you will find in LBUSD. Best place for parents who are looking for a partner in challenging students to achieve high academic standards.

Naples started as a very good school for us but went down hill as time went on and Principals changed. The PTA at this school is very unwelcoming to new families and has way too much power. The saving grace at Naples is the teachers. They have tenure, are well educated and student focused. I don't feel that the current Principal is responsive enough to parents.

I want to give parents of kids enrolling in kindergarten a heads up about the school's split class approach. 1/2 of the kindergarteners, the Early Starts - ES, have class 8:00 - 12:20. The other half, the Late Starts - LS, from 9:30 - 1:50. You will be told that there is no difference. This is not remotely true. Make your decision about Early Start or Late Start fully knowledgeable of the differences. • LS families have many, many schedule changes (over 80 for the school year)… families cannot plan upon a steady daily routine (9:30 - 1:50)… whereas ES families have extremely reliable and predictable schedules (8:00 - 12:20 with only 2-4 exceptions for the school year).• Each day, Kinder kids get 90 minutes of small class instruction (15 or fewer kids in the room). LS students will lose a minimum of 20 minutes per week of this highly desirable focused-small-class instruction… and more than an hour on some weeks (such as during parent-teacher conferences when ES students receive nearly 30% more focused-small-class instruction for the week). Over the course of the school year, this will result in LS students losing 3 full days of education time, and the equivalent of 8+ days of focused-small-class instruction vs. ES students. • Keeping track of the LS schedule can be maddening. For example, one week in November, LS students were in class 9:00 – 1:00 Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; 9:30 – 1:30 Thursday and 9:30 – 1:50 on Friday. Four of the five days were not the expected time of 9:30 – 1:50. By contrast, ES students were in class everyday from 8:00 – 12:20, exactly as expected. • LS students are not permitted to socialize or utilize the playground at morning drop off. They must sit quietly on the sidewalk while they wait to be escorted into the school. ES students run, play and socialize - making full use of the school grounds, while parents gather and talk.• Virtually all activities (PTA Meetings, Morning Assemblies, Committee Meetings) are scheduled for 8:00AM. LS families must adjust schedules by 1.5 hours to participate in these spirit-building activities. This will likely require changing family routines the night before, and the morning of, each activity… thereby disrupting rhythms and schedules. ES families have no such schedule disruptions.

Great public school with private school feel.

Great teaching staff. I love how the teachers work together and collaborate for the good of both classrooms per grade. Class sizes are on the small side. Wonderful parents who are very active and willing to help. The principal is not very well liked. He is ego driven which does not suit the needs of the school, children or PTA.

The school is like a small private school located in a very well off neighborhood. We moved here expecting a great school experience. The academics are rigorous and the homework expectations for the younger grades are out of control. Expecting first graders to spend two or more hours a night on homework is not only developmentally inappropriate but also against the school district's own guidelines. Our child has excelled academically here, however, if you have a child that has special needs or has leaning disabilities the school does absolutely nothing to help. We have seen these students as well as minority and low income students pushed out of the school. There is definitely favoritism towards the families that have been in the neighborhood through generations and everyone else gets the short end of the stick. It's a sad situation when even 5,6, and 7 year olds see this and mention it.

There is a lot to like about this school. Unfortunately this year we got the harsh teacher. She talks to the parents one way and to the kids another. There have been a lot of days where my child has been afraid to go to school to deal with this teacher. Also, the kids are all aware who has been retained, who is "bad" who hasn't done well on tests. I'm glad that some kids like her. Mine doesn't. S/he can't wait to get away from her and is counting the days that S/he never has to see her again. S/He will not be coming back to say thanks for being so hard on me.

My son turned 5 after California's Kindergarten cut-off date, but he was a perfect candidate for TK. I started researching schools as soon as our family moved to Long Beach and applied through the school of choice at Naples as soon as I could for the 2012-2013 school year. The staff was very helpful with ensuring I got all paperwork in on time and even remembered who I was when I would call and ask questions. I was so ecstatic that he was chosen. The TK teacher is absolutely wonderful and dedicated 110% to ensuring success for her students. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a wonderful school community.

Naples is an excellent school with great, caring staff and teachers with different teaching styles. I don't agree with parents that call our teachers MILITANT...I know military being a vet myself. What we have are teachers that teach responsibility and discipline that will follow them for the rest of their lives. Our teachers love our children and show them love an respect. My daughter had both so-called MILITANT teachers and she absolutely loves them! Sadly one has retired and will be missed. My son has the priviledge of being with the other teacher this year and he loves her too! Don't coddle your children...let them flourish under the guidance of these wonderful teachers. By the way...this teacher is the only teacher in Naples that has a program that visits the senior center on a regular basis. The children love it and so do the seniors.

This is a fantastic school with so many teachers, staff and parents highly committed to our childrens education experience. I would like to add to the comment on 2 teachers that are militant, etc. My child was in this classroom and she loves this teacher. There are many many kids that love this teacher. As I spent time in the classroom there were always,, repeat always, visits from former students saying Hi. There were also kids from high school coming back to say thanks for being so hard on me it's really helped me through school. I think it's a good blend, to prepare our children for the real world, life can be tough so the tough get going.

The school is really cute. With two classes per grade it is small and cozy. I have never felt unwelcome or put off by the high socio-economic background of most families. The class size is low in comparison to a lot of Long Beach schools. My one major complaint is that they keep on staff 2 teachers that parents have tried to kick out of the school. They are teachers that academically capable, treat the children militantly. I've seen the children cower in fear and be treated harshly by one such teacher. This teacher does not even allow parents in the classroom. Which is a clear sign something is terribly wrong. Yet the school keeps them on staff. 1 fortunately is retiring this year. If it weren't for this the school would rate 5 stars. Keeping a teacher that terrorizes and intimidates children is horrendous. Tenure should be eliminated. It's a bad situation when you have children crying over stress and harsh, overly critical teaching. I don't expect all teacher to be Mary Poppins. I've never seen children treated this unkind though. These teachers need to retire or find a new line of work. The school should be protecting the children, not the teachers.
