I would recommend any parent that lives in the Irving ISD to seek education elsewhere. There is no diversity in the staff which has been proven as a barrier for African-American students. If 18% of the student body makeup is African American then the staff should reflect that as well. Mr. Pollard will talk to you as if you as a parent knows nothing. His decision making skills are subpar. My daughter started her kindergarten year off with one teacher that went on maternity leave after the first two weeks. She then spent the next 5 months of the year with an amazing long term substitute, who just so happens not to be certified. I say amazing because during her time there she was able to help my daughter more than double most of her test scores, she actively tried to build a relationship with the students AND parents, and because those kids loved her especially my own. After the original teacher decided she wouldnt return then they hired someone else that is certified to take over the last 3 months of the school year. Everyday since I have gotten a phone call because of my daughter's behavior and they all act like its some big shock. My daughter was the closest with the sub so yes it has thrown her off. Since this new teacher has been placed they are no longer going on site words. She was told that the kids had no structure before she got there and that they didnt know their basic shape names, allllll of which is not true. I have old school work my child has brought home that shows they in fact were learning these things. And now my child cant even tell me what she did at school today because of the lack of structure whereas before she could tell me the approximate time (because the sub was teaching that too) they did most of the activities for the day. I will not be surprised if her next test scores arent as great. I try to go over whatever she's been learning at school but NOW I have nothing to go off of. I've tried being the active parent but after being treated like I myself am not college educated and being lied to I'll most definitely be moving her to a better school and ISD. Im also disappointed in the only black face you will see aside from 3 or 4 teachers, the assistant principal. All skin folk aint kin folk.

They promote children based on their age not their knowledge. They will promote a 5th grader to middle school with 2nd grade math skills. They don't have a program for special needs children that gets them ready for middle school. They treat them like preschoolers, then ship them off to middle school.

Very poor, they really need to up their game. Have students more interactive, use app or websites for learning skills, and send some ripe of home work or activities to keep kids minds active at home and even some in the summer time.

My two oldest daughters came to Johnston from another Irving ISD school. There are not words to Thank enough to all of them starting with the Principal and Teachers, they worked with my youngest daughter with all of her accommodations. She improved tremendously in all areas (grades, social, confidence, etc). School uses all tools available to communicate with us all the time. Teachers are involved 100% in our kids' success. They are always proactive, looking for ways to improve in all areas and help our kids to achieve their goals. Thanks Mr. Pollard for leading the amazing Johnston's team.

My daughter started attending in 4th grade. Her teachers were the best and helped my child gain confidence. She excelled and made great strides ina very short period of time. One of her teachers asked her to try out for Destination Imagination. The team won regionals and placed 7th in the State. I know have a 5th grader and Kindergartener. They love their school!
