The experiences my child had in the classroom were wonderful in PK, K, 1, and 3. (We moved after third grade.) Those years we felt informed, my son loved school, and the teachers seemed very caring, genuine, and knowledgeable. I did not like the principal. He felt as if he was trying too hard to be funny. His interactions with the kids were forced and awkward.

The new principal Mr. Brain seems to be a great asset to the school but the overall feel of the school is like going into a detention camp. The faculty is not at all pleasant and I think some of the teachers have issues dealing with the small amount of minorities in the school. It could be because there are so few of them (minorities) in the school.

This school has above average amenities, but below average expectations. From my three years experience at Windy Gap I can say that it is not an overly friendly environment for parents. There is a lot of lip service about how parents should be involved, but when they try to be proactive about their children's education they are told that the teachers and principal know best. The school has a very sterile, dentist office-like atmosphere. Lots of technology and new furniture, but very little warmth. The Success for All reading program is used here, which is great for advanced readers, but leaves much to be desired for below average students. No after school programs besides a two month long chess club and WOG (walk or jog). The teacher turnaround rate has been high. We have lost at least ten teachers and numerous other employees over the past three years, including the county 2010/2011 elementary teacher of the year. The kids only have gym class twice a week, but I hear that is normal for all Franklin County elementary schools. The school website is very disappointing. There are no class websites to check on homework assignments or SOL practice web links.

I think this school, faculty, and staff are wonderful. They may have had a few growing pains, but I think this third year has been really good for everyone involved.

What a beautiful new school! Sadly, it is being destroyed by an overbearing, over-reaching, micro-managing principal. If your child goes here, you will find Ms. Hopkins as the administrator. If you have much contact with her I feel for you. The teachers are unhappy and the children are unhappy. You might even feel as I do that you have to send your child into a cold, unhappy, concentration camp. Parent involvement is not fostered or encouraged. The secretary that has been with the school system for decades left because of this administrative monster.
