This school is pathetic. My child never liked this school. My child's teacher was very rude ,she was always found yelling a the kids. All they cared was for scores.Kids are often compared of their weekly test scores and are threatened they would surely fail.My child's personality affected a lot after attending this school.Teacher never puts any effort in helping the kids understand the concept. On one occasion the teacher threw pencil at my kid who came home crying and when i complained to the principal there was no reaction from her side and nothing was done about it.I don't recommend this school to any one.

I enrolled my child at Harahan Elementary for kindergarten (to save money). Within a week, the teacher told me that me child had ADD and he would be put detention if he did not go on medication. I was completely shocked as he had been in private school since PK2 and I have never had an issue. Since ADD is an Objective test (not Subjective), I took him to his pediatrician and he determined (along with recommendations of his PK teachers) that he has no behavioral issues. (Imagine putting a 5 yr old on amphetamines when he doesn't need it). I enrolled him in a local private school and he has had no problems (he is now in 5th grade). He still has nightmares about the "Red School" (color of uniform they wear).

I agree with the parent comment on June 1. The only thing the school cares about is the leap & i leap scores. These kids study & practice the tests for months. IF THE TEACHERS ARE TEACHING, THE KIDS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TAKE PRACTICE TESTS.The school is only concerned about their rating. SO SAD, SO VERY SAD.

I attended Harahan when I was a child and it was a great school. My kids are now going there and I am less than impressed. My son was tested for adhd and when I went to the asst primcipal and teacher they would not make any accomodatuons because he was not failing. They were more concerned about the ileap scores than his actual grades. The down time that these kids have is also ridiculous. They get yelled at for talking in the cafeteria after eating their 20 minute lunch and the before and aftercare program is like a jail. One of the aftercare personel grabbed my sons are and pulled his ear and now school is over and I still haven't heard back from the principal.

Harahan seems like a quality public school so far. My daughter is in Kindergarden and have had great teachers both this year and in PK4. Only issues at this time is that overall test scores seem to be dropping in some areas (GreatSchools ranking was 9 last year, now an 8), and that parents are unable to visit the classroom (new principal's rule?). Classes seem to be getting a little too full for my preference. A good percentage of the students seem to not live in the area, and their grandparents address might be used instead of their parents... but I suppose that is probably pretty common at any of the better public schools.

I moved to put my daughter into this school because it was ranked an A school and my nephew attended the Pre-K program and enjoyed it. Last year my daughter was in kindergarten and so far I have found that there is much to be desired in terms of communication from the school/teacher. I would ask to meet with the teacher and get ignored and questions regarding my child were often met with snippy answers. I also found that there is a serious lack of diversity inclusion at this school. There was no real focus or discussion of Black History Month but my daughter came home with bundles of things for St. Patrick's Day. For kindergarten and first grade, parents do not even have the option to buy their own supplies for the children. There is no list, only a fee of $45 due on the first day of school. I do really like that there is Before/After Care on site and it is relatively inexpensive.

Re 5/15/12..... I would have liked to have known what specifically the teacher or teachers told you about why your child was getting the "problematic" behavior notes. I did not read anything in your rateing that suggest that the teachers/school deserved a 1 star rating in your review. Seems to me that MAYBE the one star rating needs to be placed elsewhere. You can't blame the messenger for the "problematic" notes and "write up" of your child. Did you try to find out the specific problems and try to help resolve them? I am not a parent or associated with the school....but only looking for a school for my grandchild. I only rated the school because it is requried. I based my rating on what I have heard about the school

All 3 of my boys attended Harahan Elementary and we loved each one of their truly amazing teachers they had over the 3 years we were there! One of our boys has special needs. Through some difficult times in 3rd grade his teachers loved him despite his difficulty and helped us though them. He was a different kid the next year and I attribute some of that to the wonderful teachers he had! They genuinely cared about each of my boys. We moved out of state or we would still be there!
