While classes are small in size, the school is so large that there’’s definitely a lack of resources when it comes to special education and community support. My husband and I both notice our kids’ current teacher is very aloof and hasn’t offered support to teachers beyond her classroom.

Nantucket Elementary is an excellent school. My stepdaughter has made incredible improvements since she started her last fall. Her previous school was sub-par, so the experience at Nantucket was night and day. The principal, counselors, office staff, and teachers all seem to honestly care about academic and social progress. My husband and I couldn't be any happier with our experience and will be sending our daughter there when she's older.

Great School! My daughter started here and she was behind in reading as a result of her previous school in another county. I moved here for the schools and have not regretted my decision. My child started in first grade and jumped several reading levels in one year. This is remarkable and all because her teacher and the support they gave her was amazing. I don't know what the other parents are talking about, but I couldn't be happier. The only complaint is due to high parent involvement (which is a good thing) it is hard to get selected to accompany field trips. Sometimes I just go. Just make sure you have your background check if you choose to rouge like me. LOL. Saftey first! Nantucket Rocks!

Terrible! Don’t buy a house zoned for Nantucket.

My child has been going to Nantucket for the since Kindergarten and overall I've been pleased. We had a few bumps in the road with 1 or 2 teachers, but other than that if I had to do it all over again I would choose Nantucket.

I echo the previous review about zero tolerance out the window. My son attended Nantucket from kindergarten through second grade. His teachers were not intolerable (I say this as a teacher, myself). However, there was no organized effort to help my son with his social and communications differences (for lack of a better word). He is very obedient and truthful, but doesn't readily read his environment or nonverbal cues. In first grade, this had him in trouble at least once a day. It was discouraging. Then, in second grade, a few kids began to pick on him and it spread. Even his long-time friends were nasty to him. He got tackled repeatedly at recess and had rocks and mulch thrown at him. Never once did the kids who did this get in trouble or get notes sent home. I called and emailed the counselor, teacher, and administrators to no avail. They would occasionally visit him at recess or lunch, but did nothing to address the problem or help him or the other kids learn to accept one another. Also, the academic challenge seemed rather random and teacher-dependent. He learned tons in first grade, and very little in the other grades. This was upsetting because, although he tested for above-average ability in all subjects, his writing is only on par for his grade, perhaps because of little emphasis on writing. For example, homework is usually math and spelling throughout first and second grade. How hard is spelling, really, and how important? Why not practice writing? And lastly, the kids at the school are kind of rough. We met some really great kids. There are great kids at every school. But for the most part, I wouldn't want him playing with them unsupervised because they pretty much roam the neighborhood from 1st grade up with no supervision. Maybe Crofton used to be a nice place for kids, but now there are packs of kids everywhere shouting expletives, making obnoxious sex sounds, and jay walking. And they go to Nantucket. And there are more and more each year because the area is exploding with children.

My daughter has been going to this school since Kindergarten and is now in 4th grade. We have seen good teachers and we have seen awful teachers. The school does little to nothing when there are issues with the children. Zero tolerance has gone completely out the window with this school. The school lunches are terrible, if you can afford it I would suggest your child pack every day. My daughter has found everything from hairnets to plastic gloves in her food as well as expired soured milk. The school is extremely over crowded, this year alone she has 33 kids in her classroom. How these kids are being taught is beyond me but I have since hired an outside tutor so she is not behind with school. If I would have known this school was like this I never would have bought a house in Crofton.

I finally found a great school for my daughter, she loves her teachers! They have great programs to help students improve their learning.

The earlier reviewer was exactly right when they said Nantucket was very overcrowded. Their parent/student ratio is too high for teachers to meet student's needs as well as they could. Nantucket is being redistricted at the end of the school year, which will hopefully resolve this issue.

I have two girls at this school and this is our second year here. Love it. The curriculum is challenging for my 1st grader (not so challenging for my 4th grader; but then again she thinks everything is easy). I love their music program, and educational after school programs (especially Destination Imagination and MESA). The technology is excellent, the teaching staff is awesome. The 4 teachers we've had so far have all been so helpful. Can't say many bad things about this school especially when you are an involved parent and know what's going on. The school is big on technology and my kids love learning that way. i could go on and on about this school: the principal, support staff, PTA! AWESOME!

This school is so OVERCROWDED that the entire 5th grade is housed in "portables" behind the school! Very surprising since it opened in 2008! The average ratio per class is very misleading (18 versus 27 to 30 in reality). The students have very limited access to actual textbooks. Everything is taught from the "smart boards". This means no references for homework. And less engaging teachers. Teachers and staff seem to have limited control over students. Deadlines are merely guidelines...they give students very little accountability for their work. We have experienced 3 other elementary schools (due to military transfers) and this is by far our worst experience with mean cliques (boys and girls). The only redeeming factors for this school are a fantastic guidance counselor and very friendly front office staff. After all the positive reviews online, we are very disappointed that this is the school assigned to the house we bought.

I have my third child now attending this school, and it has been an excellent experience for all three kids, academically and socially. I have one child with special needs who has been very well attended to, as well...In fact, we had him in one of the county's public charter schools for a short while, then switched him back to Nantucket because it served him so much better. While there is always variability between teachers, I've delt with a dozen of them now, plus special ed services, and they all are somewhere between good and absolutely fantastic! One of my favorite times of the year is the annual talent show...You can't see it and not fall in love with the teachers, kids, and families that make this place great!

My 5 yr. old started her first year of school this year and I absolutely love this school, as does she. The principal is outside every morning and afternoon really taking a part in the school. And they have a great policy to make the school safe.

Nantucket is wonderful. My grandson will be graduating andf moving on to Crofton Middle School next year. We will miss Nantucket. The teachers are excellent and so caring of the children.

I love this school. Of course, the building itself is really nice, being only a few years old, and it has current technology. My daughter attended 4th and 5th grade at Nantucket and was well prepared for middle school. She is now doing high school level math in 7th grade. My younger daughter had an amazing kindergarten experience. She loved going to kindergarten, reads well, and enjoyed the opportunity to read a book to her former kindergarten teacher's class now that she is in first grade. Her kindergarten teacher really got to know her students, even going to many birthday parties that she was invited to. The teachers work as a team with the other teachers in their grade, and the children benefit from that. They are also very accessible, responding quickly to emails. My only concern is with the growing class sizes - although the school is new, it is way over capacity.

Most teacher are young and without much experience. Other school have more experienced teacher and that makes a huge difference. Reading program is poor comparing with other Elementary Schools in Crofton. Reading and spelling program needs to improve bid deal. Technology is good because the Principal focus more in technology than a serious reading program. PTA needs to reflect diversity and do more things for free for the children. Principal may not be open to suggestions or to learn from school that are alredy getting greater ratings.

Great technology. Poor reading program. Other Elementary Schools in Crofton have better reading programs and spelling. School could do a lot better in reading. PTA not very diverse. PTA does not do much activities for free. If parents are not email or computer oriented they may not get to know PTA. Some NES teachers are young and not very experience. Friendly Principal but may not take suggestions regarding better education.

My family moved to Crofton because of the reputaion of its schools. So far they have been very disappointed. My granddaughter is a gifted student, and now as a 9 yr old, has never received less that a "A" on an assignment or on her report card. Even though the teachers and staff are very nice, they have done very little to challenge her academically. They have a pull-out program that she attends once a week for math, but this does not address our concern that her teacher has not discovered a way to challenge her in the classroom. Sending her home with random worksheets is not the way to motivate a gifted child. She is totally bored. What a disappointment.

We just moved here from Hawaii. We have two children. One of which is special needs. By far, this school is excellent. The teachers are wonderful, the atmosphere is great and my children love going to school.

Amazing school! State of the art technology, fabulous music program, focus on rigorous academics, citizenship and kids health and fitness. Couldn't be more happy with this school. Top notch administrators and teachers.
