This school has a fairly supportive community; some of them try to strongarm staff for their kids if things do not go their way but most do good things for the school. It is sad that so many great teachers have left, the school has lost too many teachers in every department/grade and coaches/sponsors (three athletic directors in three years and three math teachers in one class in a year and both music teachers have changed over in the past year). Last year seventh grade had at least half of their teachers leave in the middle of the year. GCS can do better than this - we can make this school great again!

Office staff is wonderful and will bend over backwards for you. Some teachers will do whatever it takes to see your child succeed, but then there's the leadership team that allows the bad apples to try and spoil the bunch. The leaders need to figure out who is causing the problems and try to rectify the situation. Kids who are being mean often have problems at home. It would be nice for the principals to track down the problem causers and talk to the parents (see if they care). If not, give them a buddy system to work with.

Negative. There are bullying issues and the arts programs are lacking. Lots of priority put on athletics and suffering art programs.

10! Ignore any reviews prior to 2017. There is new leadership here. The physical school itself is old and a bit rundown but the amazing staff, children, education and overall culture of this school is amazing. A rare diamond in today's schools.

This school sucks because:- The school building is in poor condition and moldy.- The walkway outside smells of rotten eggs and on rainy days the sidewalks get massive puddles that students have to walk through to get to class- The teachers don't put much effort into engaging the students. I wouldn't blame them though I wouldn't want to work at Hawley either.- Students misbehave and that probably has to do with the lack of a quality discipline system. - The lunch food is gross and I always find hair in my mashed potatoes.- The school neglects the artsy students and focusses way too much on the athletic- The office workers are very biased, they favor the athletic. As a student, I would not recommend this school :-(P.S. Mr. Cope needs a raise

The school is extremely out dated and the children do not have adequate outdoor equipment during patio time. They have a run down basketball court (if you can call it that) and volley ball area. Teachers are constantly leaving which hinders the kids learning. Admin staff do not communicate effectively with parents, good or bad. I would not have moved into this area had I known they would be zoned to this school. There has also been a lot of transportation issues with the buses. Overall, not a happy parent.

This is a typical and struggling public school with a few exceptions. Benefits: laptops for every student to use at home and in class, there are more choices for extra curricular activities, and a large campus with plenty of room for expansion. Concerns: Level of Instruction is slightly below average. The student to teacher ratio is currently 30+ : 1. (Next year, it is projected to be 35:1) For every respectable teacher three are in need of retraining and another is in need of finding a new occupation. Top Concern: Communication There have been several occasions when teachers completely failed to respond to multiple emails, notes, and phone calls. (After more than a week) I have only had to make contact 4 or 5 times. If the concern or issue is extremely important and quick response is needed, I have to go to the school in person. Even these concerns are often dismissed or seem to be handled as an inconvenience. The current administration demonstrates similar behavior after being made aware of communication concerns. Conclusion: If the administration was monitored more closely and/or replaced, the school could improve considerably because the potential is there.

Every school has some room for improvement but overall I have had no trouble with my kids at this school.

I am currently in 8th grade at G.C. Hawley and am only giving it a 3 becuase so far its been an okay school. The ellectives are very bad in my opinion, Im in Honors Chorus and it isnt very well funded. Niether is the band or Jazz Band programs. The cafiteria food is not good in the slightest, and no healthy choices are there, only the occasional bruised apple. Ive had fun and have good grades but that is only because Im smart and took my classes seriously. There is some discrimination issues, not with race but with backgrounds. If your child wants to excel and be in a well funded and well taught school dont send them to Hawley. In my whole three years at Hawley ive only had 4 teachers that added to my knowledge out of about 15 teachers in all. I loved my expierence because i made the most of it.
