Since moving my kids to Hazel Dell from a school in Hillsboro, they are thriving. The school was proactive in meeting me about my son's needs/ 504 and behavioral background. From before the first day of school they knew his name and treated him with respect and high/ living expectations. Even when one of my children slips up and makes mistakes, it is handled fairly and calmly without insinuating they are "bad". The principal, school psychologist, AVP, and teachers are all well versed in social emotional learning. The school is also installing leadership in ALL kids. It is amazing to see what they are doing.

Teachers aren’t active in communicating with parents, responding to emails on time, feedback on academics etc. I’ve experienced a fair share of passive aggressive, discriminatory treatment at this school. It’s disheartening because it takes away from the community involvement & trust the teachers could be building with the parents/ students. I’ve pondered a while on home schooling before my child started attending school. The principal turns a blind eye to everything & a select few teachers/staff have left a bad taste in my mouth. They don’t report incidents with your students, I would homeschool/ follow-up with curriculum at home.

(long read) I will start this review off by saying both me and my daughter are white, this is only important because I've heard so many negative comments about discriminations at this school from community members that this information is necessary. My daughter attended this school in Kindergarten and I watched my child go from loving school to fighting me every time she had to attend. During my daughter's firs year she was hurt by many other students on the playground multiple times. I received multiple notes of her hitting her head ect... Many of the incidents I only heard about because of my daughter, such incidents as when a student from her class punched her on the bus, or when a student yanked her off the swing set causing her back pain for over a week. Memorable mentions are when my daughters shirt was yanked by another student and they raised their fist to hit my daughter (in class) before being stopped by the teacher, the teacher letting kids with hand foot and mouth attend school for multiple days, and lets not forget the bus driver who left my Kindergartener alone at the bus stop after her daycare had a last minute closer and didn't inform me (another issue in itself). When I called the office about the incident they tried to tell me it was my fault since my daughter does not always take the bus, when I informed the lady that my daughter had been taking the bus two days a week since the start of the school year ( months at this time) she told me I should have had a kindergartener tag on her backpack and to contact transpiration as they have no responsibility in regards to transport. I was beside myself and outraged! I will say that the next call to transportation went completely different, they took full responsibility and apologized multiple times and assured me it would never happened again. Kindergarten was a complete disaster for my daughter and it was difficult to finish the school year because besides everything that had been happening I also noticed my daughter falling behind academically in comparison to her friends (both younger and older) who attended schools like Walnut grove, Kings way, Lincoln and Eleanor Roosevelt. I brought my concerns up to her teacher but the concerns were not reciprocated. I reached out t resources to see if they had suggestions but was referred back to her teacher. No concerns I've brought up have ever been taken seriously and I'm not sure if it's because I'm a young single mother or they simply don't care.

My student is about halfway through their elementary experience at Hazel Dell. Every teacher, from their classroom teacher to their art/PE/creative movement/music instructors has at one time or another gone out of their way to make my student feel seen, lovavle, and capable. The librarian has been instrumental in turning my reluctant reader into a kid who feels at home in a library, and who believes they are capable of reading anything, even when it's challenging. Recess is very important to kids at this age, and we hear about the recess monitors at home often; they clearly work hard every day to make the students feel safe with appropriate behavioral expectations. My student is learning healthy and effective ways to deal with conflict with their peers, which makes them feel proud and self-reliant. They have access to a school counselor who has personally helped my student navigate tricky situations with friends, making them a more confident kiddo in complex social situations. The school has a therapy dog - Ruby Joy - a Free Little Pantry, and a Free Little Library. The values of kindness and community are present in every part of this school, and we feel so lucky that our kiddo landed here. My student feels very connected to her school, and by extension her community because of what happens at Hazel Dell Elementary on a consistent, daily basis. As parents we feel connected because of the excellent communication from the school via text, email, phone calls, and frequent classes and family nights offered by the school.Bottom line: my student's mental health and social-emptional development are taken seriously and supported by every adult at this school. She's getting a good education, and potentially more importantly, she's developing a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Test scores do not reflect the quality of teachers in this building. I have had two kids go through Hazel Dell in the past with one still attending. New neighbors complain and see the rating on this site, but new families need to give this school a chance. The teachers that I have met are caring and communicate my son's progress and needs at school. My son struggles with following directions and hyperactivity. His teacher partnered with me from the start of the school year last year and worked with me throughout the year to focus on the positive, celebrate little milestones and help him in academics and his behavior goals. I encourage other parents to become an active member of their child's education and ignore the number on this site. Get a tour of the school while class is in session! My son's education was positively impacted because of the TEACHERS and PARENT partnership. For that reason alone, my son will be here this year even with other options with higher numbers in the area. I'm excited to see the progress my son makes this year.

Sad place to have to go to school. No empathy for special needs. Kids basically get Stockholm syndome from what I saw. Weird manipulation and shaming tactics trickles down to kids acting out negatively. Low income neighborhood without parental participation too...just sad.

I am happy for the education my third grader is receiving, however my child in grade K is not having the best experience.

Hazel Dell has made my children into well prepared middle school students. My daughter was so well prepared and is a shining star in her classes. Hazel Dell is what you make of it, just like any other school. If you have a negative, combative attitude and aren't in a position to hear advice about how to guide your student towards a path to success, then this isn't the school for you. It is what you make of it. Be open minded and positive and your child will thrive. The people are amazing and care deeply for their students. I have seen it many times, in all forms. Professional, dedicated, caring.....

I am so pleased with the education my child is getting at Hazel Dell Elementary. The staff is amazing and treat the families and children with such respect. I am always greeted with a smile and feel as though I can go to them for any situation. The building is clean and the hot lunches are awesome! The teachers and the Principal go out of their way to assess each child and their needs, and then respond accordingly. Either to up the challenge or to slow down. I cant say enough great things!

This school based on MSP state testing falls well below average. Is has a ranking of 3 on a scale 1 to 10. For some reason lower income students have worse performance then kids with a higher income. I do not understand this. Is the school saying that kids with a lower income does not have the same ability to learn or are they picking and choosing who they teach. I see the community ratings on this page how ever it does not state the ratings of this school based on test scores based on the states expected requirement. I urge everyone to go to the state test scores based on other schools around us, income, ethnic group and any other information you can gather based on facts. At that point let the school leaders no how you really feel and get involved. We as parents must be the leaders of our children and the school we send them to. Any suggestions to make this school better please put your review on here or bring it to the school and school board. Our children deserve a great education.

We attended this school for 3 years and have since moved out of the district. I must say that we miss it terribly! From the caring and always approachable teachers to the impressive involvement of the principle, this school is so welcoming and inclusive of all of it's student's. The parent friendly atmosphere combined with top notch supervision of the children always put my mind at ease, and I realize now that not every school has it as together as Hazel Dell. I appreciated the consistent and firm yet completely caring attitudes of the teachers - and their willingness to embrace each child's individuality. Thanks for taking such wonderful care of our children and we miss you Panthers!!
