This used to be a good school, but now it isn't. It's located in a decent neighborhood which I live in. The school moral is horrible. My son went in to speak to the principal or assistant principal & was excorted out by security. Not because he threatened anyone or made a big scene only because he asked to speak to the higher up after speaking to the dean & not satisfied with hos response. I advise my son since they were not willing to meet with him to speak to you about my grandson being assaulted & receiving punishment after being assaulted to make a complaint at the 45th precient & go get a consultation at Pena & Kahn. It seems that PS71 middle school does practices meeting with the parents. We do not want to get the child who assaulted my grandson in trouble with the law we just wanted to speak to the principal about giving him lunch detention which we feel isn't addictquat. As a parent you take time from work to come to the school & speak to the Dean, assistant Principal, & they do not give you the respect to meet up with you & discuss the issues. We do not have the time to take off & make an appointment not all of us have flexible jobs.

PS 71 is an interesting school that fosters a strong sense of community among faculty, students, and parents/guardians. This sense of community helps students feel welcome and comfortable, which is crucial for their overall well-being. PS 71 also excels in teaching academic knowledge and life lessons that will benefit students throughout their lives. The school provides opportunities for students to express their individuality and develop collaboration skills, both of which are essential as they grow into young adults and contribute to society. However, the strong sense of community at PS 71 can sometimes create unintended consequences. As a school that serves children from kindergarten through 8th grade, long-term relationships between faculty, students, and parents/guardians are common. This is especially evident among students who have attended PS 71 for many years. New students who join in grades 6, 7, or 8, coming from other schools, may find it challenging to integrate fully into this established community.During my observations, I noticed a disparity in how students are treated. While academic knowledge is crucial, the psychological and emotional impact of a school's environment on a child lasts a lifetime. I commend any teacher, principal, or faculty member who goes beyond the norm in a child's educational journey. However, my experience at PS 71 has left me with mixed feelings. As I write this review while attending the 8th-grade graduation of 2024, I am witnessing behaviors that concern me. For example, there is excessive and overly enthusiastic applause for some children, while others receive only murmurs and light claps. All children should be treated equally and recognized for their hard work to instill a sense of fairness and respect as they grow. This review is not an indictment of PS 71 as a bad educational institution. Rather, it is an observation of behaviors that suggest a preferential connection with certain students over others, rather than providing the same care and attention to all students.

I'm a former student (was here from 1st-8th grade) and it's an ok school. There's a lot of after-school activities and events for the students, and the staff is welcoming for the most part. But something I've noticed is that there's a huge amount of favoritism among the staff. For example, there was a kid in my grade who, to be frank, was absolutely terrible at singing. But he still managed to get the lead role in a play because his mother was an important member of the PTA, which is ridiculous to me. Not only that, but bullying is a pretty widespread issue here and they only report it if the student getting bullied tells their parents or fights back. Also a lot of the guidance counselors aren't great, I remember some just letting the kid use their work computer until they calmed down lol. It's not the worst school but my experience with it wasn't that good

Absolutely the worst school , I’ve have 4 of my children attend . Teachers aren’t nearly professional as they should be . Special education teachers and paras aren’t trained to deal with not even reg Ed children. Security grabs young distressed children by their clothing & honestly my list can continue . Overall okay re consider sending your minority children to this school . They will treat them differently. Currently looking for a better school for my children .

I attended this school from 3rd to 5th grade. I loved my friends. I had lonely moments but I always found a best friend that came over my house after school. I was happy that I had a strict teacher who made sure we visited the library and paid attention in class. I consider myself lucky to have attended this school. I used to be able to see it right out of my bedroom window!

My children experience at the school was ok. Not pleased how children go out for lunch with boys and girls at the same time. Principal needs to be replaced she has exceeded her time at this school.

I wouldn’t trust my gold fish with the teachers. Especially the aids.

This school is so horrible when it comes to taking care of a child with special needs. I wouldn't recommend anyone who has a child with a learning disability to attend this school. The school claims they have the experience to take care of a child with autism, but all i get is a call every morning because his behavior is unacceptable. They give him the same discipline like any ordinary kid would get, but with his lack of understanding it is pointless. They also blame the parent for his behavior which i think is unintelligent.

My eldest daughter graduated last year and is excelling in high school. PS 71 greatly prepared her for the transition. Most children in her grade were accepted into great private schools. My youngest who's in 4th grade has struggled but her teacher has been very hands on, even offering private tutoring once a week at school during her own time. I couldn't ask for a better school!

My son has been attending for 7 years and I love it. The best thing to do as a parent is to be involved... Period. The teachers care and Mrs. Mirando cares. Mrs. Calzolaio and Mrs. Mirando are absolute blessings for this school, so as parents we need to unite. Please attend school events and fundraisers!!!

its a decent, and safe school, with fair academics and many caring teachers, and some not so caring teachers. my only complaint is the disconnection of the office administrators and school officials from the parents. the office employees are quite offish, administration is difficult to get in touch with, and the principal is unreachable for the most part.as a matter of fact, they had recently silently acquired a new principal with out even notifying the school community.in all fairness it is one of the better schools in the bronx, and it is not in any way a terrible experience. just know going in, not to get much help from the admins, outside of the bare minimum, if you very specifically seek it out.

Can't say enough good things about this school. Great teachers and a lot of clubs and programs in the school. This school is still one of the best in the area and it goes up to 8th grade. A lot of kids got scholarships to great high schools.

Principal is amazing. Makes the school an environment of empowerment by welcoming teacher and parental input towards curriculum and positive educational growth for the students. Has an open door policy for parents to come see her with concerns. Walks the school corridors non-stop and is a constant presence in the classrooms and PTA meetings, assemblies, school events, etc. kids love her!! Has brought many programs Afterschool programs to the school as well as procured funding to improve school environment

This school is great, it has provided my children thus far with academics and activities that they enjoy. They have been there since kindergarden, my son will be going into 5th grade and my daughter onto 7th grade. In every school there is going to be issues, especially when it is so overcrowded like this one. However, if I have to compare it with other schools, this is definitely my choice! My kids love it as well!

This school was awesome when Margaret was the security guard..she knew all the kids by name and exactly how to deal with them. I've had great experiences with my children but to be honest, since a lot of the teachers and staff live in the neighborhood, there is a lot of favoritism. IF THEY KNOW YOUR CHILD, most likely they'll get on the basketball team...talent almost always had nothing to do with it...They're better off not having try outs, and doing a raffle..When Mr.Cooper was principal, there were a lot more issues..Mrs.Calzolaio is a way better principal..Margie the nurse is great! The school is very overcrowded.it holds twice the amount of students it was meant for and so there isn't enough supervision at lunch time, when there are most of the fights.

My school is one of the best public schools in the Bronx. Most of the teachers are very caring and try their best to have their students do their best. Hopefully this year all the teachers will be evaluated on their teaching skills so every student gets the best education they can have.
