I have to echo the comments of the other reviewer on 3.25.22 below. However I am a parent not a student. My son had the same experience they didn't say the N word instead they called his name and made money sounds. The principal Campbell explained it away as a "game" ..which my son wasn't playing btw.. no action. Then to add insult to injury when my son's TOURETTES a documented ada protected disability flares and coprolalia showed up by way of expletives and vulgarity suddenly there are suspensions flying all over the place. They seem to have policy for sick kids but not for HATE CRIMES! SUPERINTENDENT is passive pretends to care shows minimal movement and school board silent everyone sits on their hands. Not one person even followed up to see if my son was ok! My son's teaching staff is awesome I hate he will lose their support change is another ignitor of anxiety/tourettes but his mental health is my main priority!

Solon Middle School is excellent. I have gone to Roxbury Elementary School, Orchard Middle School, and next year I will be attending Solon High School and I cannot be more prepared.Learning: SMS excels at their education system. They are one of the best in the state, and have teachers who teach very well. I have never felt unprepared for an assessment as the teachers always review. Homework is not to bad, it could be much worse. For some classes, there is virtually no homework unless you don't finish in class.Teaching: All the teachers I have come across are wonderful. They are great at their jobs and always review before an assessment so their students are well prepared. They are also very kind and makes the class entertaining sometimes. However, they do know when to be serious and focus on teaching.Social-Emotional Support: SMS has a counselor who will always help you, but the teachers are there for you too. Even if you aren't their student, you can go to them for just about anything. They also do not tolerate jokes about emotional subjects and I have seen people being commended for doing so. Special Education:I have seen my fair share of kids who have special disabilities and all of them have guides who help and instruct them throughout their day. I have even worked with a kid with a disability and everything went fine as the guide helped and made sure my partner was focused.Safety: SMS makes sure all their students are safe and routinely have drills and make sure the students know what to do in case of emergency. They also have a system for people who don't do homework so that it can help them do so. They do have punishments, but they are only inflicted on people who have done wrong.Family Engagement: SMS is very good at communicating with family. They send out emails to inform parents and even students can be notified about things like tests. The teachers also usually respond with a day's notice. Overall, SMS is a great school to go to. I have never felt any hard emotions going to this school, but I guess the experience is different for everyone. However, this school is amazing when it comes to education and the teachers are all great. The school does their best to accommodate others and makes sure that everyone at their school is safe. I love SMS and I will be sad to leave it when I go to high school.

Going to this school has been one of the worst experiences of my life. The people who watch over us at lunch scream at us and act as if we are 4 year olds, the entire staff does. Staff is stuck in the past and continues to silence voices of children and distance themselves from self thought. Teachers act as if students who need more help in some subjects are just stupid. With the 'No Tolerance Policy' if someone hits you or calls you something you just have to take it, you can't do anything. Someone got suspended for giving someone advil. The rules are incredibly dumb and the principle, Mr. Campbell, doesn't care about any bigotry faced by students. A white girl called a black boy the n-word for beating her is basketball and Campbell told him to just get over it. If you want a safe school where your kids will actually feel safe and heard do not send your kids here.

I was student at Solon Middle School and graduated from the Solon School System in 1999. My parents moved my family to Solon because of their educational standards and reputation and I feel that I received an excellent education as a result. So reading the negative reviews is quite shocking because that was not my experience at all. In middle school my teachers were very engaged and creative in their lesson plans and classroom teaching. Certainly there were subjects that I liked more than others and so would feel bored at times, not because of lack of effort from the teachers, but more so my interests/lack there of. However, there were certainly times that my teachers made subjects that I found boring interesting as well. For those students who excelled in a subject, particularly math, those students were provided the opportunity to take classes at the high school to ensure that they are being academically challenged (and in high school at post secondary institutions). Clearly, its been years since I was a student at SMS so changes inevitably have occurred. However, I currently work as an academic adviser at an Ohio university and the students that I see coming from Solon have good things to say about the school system and feel prepared for college level coursework.

This school focused on only the standar tests and its ranking, not the individual education at all. My son was an A student, but was bored and frustrated at this school. I contacted the principal about this issue many times and proposed my idea to solve it. The principal was very arbitrary and tried to use Pizza to erase the rooting problem! The new yong assistant principal cooperated the principal very well. He punished my son with detention without noticement and my permission!! It is an awefull school!

It has a good group works and clubs but not educational.It would need to improve in reading , math and science .My son hates this school beacause of no education

Solon Middle School gets high marks on this website because all the teaching is geared toward excelling on state tests. There is no room for creativity, spontaneity, student opinions, etc. The mandatory teaching of core curricula has taken the passion out of the teachers. My son, who briefly attended the school, told me the staff appears bored and uninterested in what they are teaching. The principal appears not to care as she is retiring soon. That's what happens when you take $ from the government. You have to follow their guidelines and we all know what happens when the government becomes involved in anything. My husband and I are very well educated individuals who are sorely disappointed in this school.
