My child has never been more miserable at school than when she went here. There is zero fun or engagement and zero communication with the teachers. Seemed like they were on lockdown for one thing or another at least once every few months. Terrible experience

This school, it’s absolutely awful. They have no care for the children safety. On so many occasions you can see it’s more about looks then learning. Do not send your children here under this administration. I put one star because it needed a rating but the school is a 0 out of 5

This is the worst school ever, no regards for safety are students wellbeing. The principal is un educated and only think about herself. I would rate this school a negative 1

In my opinion, this is just a bad school that is run by an incompetent principal who couldn't care less about his position. If you select this school, do not expect much in the way of help or support from any of the staff. You can also expect your child to be suspended for just about anything they are accused of as the suspension rate is more than double the state average from what I have found Nearly all scores and measures are in the bottom range for the state. The students seem out of control at this school with behavior and bullying. It also seems like drugs are becoming a problem at the school as well. My child cannot wait to be done with this school as well as I..... In my opinion, this place is a good example of why public schools are getting a bad reputation.

My youngest son has been in this school 2 1/2 yrs, and it has been the absolute worst experience ever. If your child is an honors student or does okay then this school is fine (my older son was honors student & absolutely no problems), however if your child struggles academically then do not bother sending him/her to this school because they will fall further behind. Under state law my son is eligible for a 504 plan. It even says so on the MCPSS website. However, the LD teacher there simply will not work with us. He barely passed 6th & 7th grade, and now in 3rd quarter of 8th grade he has all E's with the exception of PE and is going to fail. Only ONE teacher has talked to me about being concerned. My cries for help to the asst principal, counselor and LD teacher have been ignored for the past 2 1/2 years. They always give some kind of excuse. He will be repeating 8th grade but though homeschooling. Non academically - if your child does not wear Nike shoes then be prepared for daily harassment & bullying from other students. The school has become somewhat better with dealing with bullying since having the new principal, at least in our experience, and that is only because of the bad publicity with the viral video last year.

This school does not care for the safety of their kids. The faculty is lazy and has no concern for the kids that attend this school. I will never understand why ppl are so scared to confront the wrong. This school needs real leaders instead of weak. I would never put my child in a school that doesn't care about thier education and well being. This is part of why our kids are like they are because they have no one that loves them and cheering them on. Kids need to be cared for praised and loved to succeed and consequences for those who cause caos. This school is known for bullying and suffer no consequences. I personally think it should be shut down or have someone in office that has a backbone to get business done. I do NOT recommend this school district if you want an educated child!

SMS is a good school if you are in honors classes as my oldest has excelled greatly. If you are in regular classes like my youngest, be prepared for constant bullying and kids that act like animals on a daily basis. My son and several other students in his class are harassed daily. The teachers and administration do nothing about it. Instead of punishing the troublemakers they punish the entire class. This is why we will be homeschooling our youngest this coming fall.

Semmes middle school is a nice school and our student has done very well. As a member of various organizations, NJHS is not very active and that has been disappointing for our student. Education wise, most of the classes have had supportive and knowledgeable teachers. PE program is poor, compared to the previous middle schools our child attended before moving here. The PE coaches concentrate on those in class that are in sports and forget everyone else. Our previous middle schools programs were very active and the students were taught numerous sports and given opportunities plus all the rules, regulations, field size, scoring, etc. Our child learned so much and this PE program has been extremely disappointing. The AP classes in the other middle schools were more challenging and did not allow for "students to act up or not bring their homework in on time." Additionally, students should not be an officer in more than one organization at a time so as to give others a chance and the opportunity to build their leadership skills. This was the rule in the other schools we were involved with.

My husband and I have been very pleased with Semmes Middle school. My daughter is in the 8th grade@ the Academy at Semmes and loves her teachers. I feel like the teachers at Semmes Middle School did a great job preparing my son for high school. He is in advanced honors classes and will graduate this year. We have no complaints.
