This school meets excellence in standards of education! The leadership at Somerville Elementary and the united team makes all the difference to put this school at the highest level. The vibe in this school is warm, supportive and nurturing, while having high expectations for social, emotional, behavioral and academic achievements. The expectations are clear and both staff and families in the school community all commit to these values and rise to high performance. I have lived in several different areas in the country and I have never seen such perfect balance for all aspects of child development and growth as I see at Somerville. It is the heart of the neighborhood and the teachings are contagious! Academically, Somerville provides a well rounded and enriched experience! Kudos to Somerville! Teachers, leadership, staff, parents, Home-School Association and of course the children! Keep making a difference and pushing forward!!!

My daughter went to this school for four years, it’s an amazing school, with extraordinary teachers! I would rate this school a 9/10.

I just found my report card in an old box. Dated 68/69. It was a wonderful school to go to then and I’m pleased it sounds like it still is. Great Public school education back then.

Somerville is, in one word, special. From the top right down to the bottom, everyone is happy and committed to be a part of this school. The culture is unique. While academically competitive, the school does not blindly embrace new curricula or technology. It moves in a thoughtful direction. Nowhere else will you find the same level of parent involvement and community. The extracurricular programs number many and are quite varied. The Dad's Night variety show has been running for 70 years straight and is the stuff of legend. The Fall Progressive Dinner is a wonderful outlet for parents to meet and mingle. The International Day program is unrivaled in its ability to foster and showcase the various cultures of the student body, as is the 4th & 5th grade theater program, which is directed by parent alum with Broadway talent. You name it. Somerville's got it. And because of the school's location, many kids walk and bike to school safely starting at a very young age. There is simply no place like Somerville.

You won't find a better school than Somerville. The principal, Dr. Oates, is warm, professional, enthusiastic, and approachable. Upon moving into the district, she personally took a look at my son's IEP and placed him with a teacher that has a strong background in special education. The next time I saw her, she remembered both my and my son's names. The staff here is highly qualified, and a strong emphasis is placed on ongoing teacher professional development; this is a very valuable asset and one that you don't necessarily find in all schools. The families are wonderful; parents are very involved and encouraged to be. I have had nothing but good experiences at Somerville.

I can't say enough about the teachers we've had -- they're spectacular. Kids are well-mannered. Many parents go above and beyond in terms of fund-raising and hands-on involvement. Principal is energetic and on the ball. Somerville has a very good writing program. Arts and music are very strong and well supported. Language program seems like a weak spot. They don't have teachers; they use Rosetta Stone. It's not clear to me what, if any, progress my son has made in Spanish.
