As a parent and PTA president, I am incredibly impressed with Jacksonville Elementary. Principal Miller's personal connection with students is evident as she greets each one by name every morning. When we missed kindergarten registration, she personally evaluated our daughter's readiness. Inspired by her dedication, I volunteered as PTA president. The community involvement is outstanding, with teachers, staff, parents, and students working together to support after-school clubs and events. We continually seek feedback to improve and are excited for our daughter's upcoming second-grade year.

Fantastic teachers and Administration! They won a Blue Ribbon for Excellence. Highly recommended school!

My kids have been JES for the past 5 years and they've had an excellent time. The teachers have been great and my sons have had wonderful time making friends.

I personally went there and still have terrible nightmares about everything that happened. The teachers were horrible, the students were so cruel and they all treated me like I was dirt. I have permanent scars after everything that happened there. PLEASE, do not send your child there! I was begging to be homeschooled when I was in third grade because I was so tormented.

It was like a nightmare. Because we were poor, they let us know, in no uncertain terms, that we are not welcome there from day 1. Almost on a daily basis, they labeled, punished, and belittled my young daughter. They isolated her, punished her, suspended her, harassed her, and looked at us sideways from the moment we entered the campus. Besides all this, the office personnel have extreme dismissive, smug attitudes. It is shocking that people with these mentalities have charge over small kids.

I have two children at JES. One currently in fifth grade and another in second grade. I have been very happy with their education. As long as your child is a well behaved and a smart student they will be fine. If you find if your child is a bit of a troublemaker, I have witnessed the teachers show their frustration. Obviously, the more parental involvement, as far as volunteering is concerned, the better. Children seem to get better treatment if parents are highly involved and visible in the school. Generally, the teachers are good, some other than others. One of the downsides of the school is that the teachers do not provide a lot of communication between the parents. Sometimes it seems as if they don't want to reach out because parents may ask too many questions or would require them to work extra. Security has gotten better over the past couple of years. It used to be that you can walk around the outside of the school and find classroom/hallway doors propped open. Not many extracurricular activities as far as clubs etc. You have to go to Carroll Manor Rec for that.

We have had a (mostly) wonderful experience at JES. Until fifth grade, we were beyond thrilled with the teachers, who have all gone out of their way to ensure my children succeeded. Communication was always wonderful and responses to emails and concerns prompt. The principal is great and as someone else wrote, "runs a tight ship". You can tell the teachers both respect her and very much enjoy working under her. My only complaint is regarding fifth grade, we found it to be starkly different from all the other grades as far as quality . the classes were HUGE. Two of the three teachers my child had did not seem invested or particularly interested. (kudos to one though -- I wish my child had had her for all the subjects) It was next to impossible to get responses to emails regarding our concerns. I found the whole experience disappointing and confusing given the otherwise wonderful experience we have had at JES. I am truly hoping fifth grade changes before my other children get there.

It is a fantastic school with wonderful teachers, phenomenal leadership (principle and staff), and overwhelming parent participation.

I read the previous reviews- Debbie G is a GREAT principal- the point is not whether she is PC with parents (which she is BTW) but the fact that the kids love her. she runs a tight ship which is exactly what is needed- teachers are mostly great. They respond to parent concerns quickly and go out of their way to accomodate individual students.

I completely agree with the comment in November. The person who commented in January must be going to a different school! The office staff doesn't even look up when a parent walks in, the principal is not friendly and allows her teachers to show movies to the kids, a lot. This principal does not go out of her way to ensure every child gets a great education. I know many parents that have been so unhappy that they have moved their children to private schools. I think there are good teachers at this school but there are some not so good teachers. My biggest complaint is basically the principal and the office staff. I do agree that the PTA is wonderful at Jacksonville.

I just checked in on this website to see how our school was fairing. I was totally shocked with the previous comment. Anyone who has been at this school with any regularity can see the level of commitment exhibited by this principal and staff. The principal meets goal's attributed to a good (I should say excellent) principal on a daily basis. She puts forward all her energies to ensure that each and every child is given the best educational opportunity. She deals with every situation and every person with warmth, humor and expertise. No school is perfect but this school is striving to be the best it can be and is succeeding in most areas under excellent administrative leadership. I must also say that the PTA support is outstanding. All in all this is a wonderful school!

Weak principal leadership on display regularly, ranging from the office staff to the lack of quality and consistent education within the same grade levels. Special area teachers (e.g. art, music) are excellent, and some grade-level teachers are great. The job is to make sure all are as great as they can be, and that is simply not happening. Seems that principal leadership is just mailing it in - a sentiment shared by quite a few parents. Shame, as this school has enough parent and community support to be great.
