Parent of 10th grader. I believe kids are afforded lots of opportunities and flexibility at CHS. The amount of AP courses, electives and clubs are impressive and district has been great communicating with parents throughout an unusual and difficult school year. Some issues with staff / admin turnover should be addressed.

This is the worst academic institution I have ever experienced. This school honestly takes children’s wills to live. Never been unhappier.

i only graduated a year ago and i am glad that i was able to get out of there. the school is toxic with bullying and the school favors kids who excel in academics, music/theatre and sports. others only have a good experience because they either were popular or were an athlete. teachers play favorites with their students offering more help to those who have potential and leaving average and below average kids in the dust.

We have had a great experience here! We considered private schools but a friend had a daughter at the high school and they raved about it. So happy we choose Hoval! You get the great academics of a private school without the cost, and the extracurricular benefits of a larger school than most private schools. I am not entirely sure what the last review is referring to. If you look at test scores for this school, they are well above average. Not only that but their is a wide AP offering (especially for a public school!) and the student success at the AP tests are well known. The school has also won various awards over the years, particularly in the music departments. Some teachers are resistant to change but when talking with them I have often found a good reason. I have encountered many teachers willing to go above and beyond for my children. The principal greets students and parents by name and truly seems to care.

Slow to innovate curriculum, could take years to discuss and implement. Some great teachers that teach with passion but others that drag down the overall quality. Some subjects just present material through a lecture without looking to create an environment of learning guided by discussions and activities. These subject areas seem to be more concerned with being able to say they covered large amounts of material rather than making sure the students are learning the material presented. Teach mostly to the middle of the student body. If you have kids on either end they will receive very little compared to other schools in the region. For example, AP class offerings need to expand to meet the needs of the students. Leadership will say it is all about the kids but many tough decisions are not made with the kids best interest in mind. Staff resists change. Good school, just below average, with the potential to be great. The strength is in the community.

I can honestly say that my whole educational experience was so great thanks to the Hopewell Valley school district. In the high school, you get the option to choose your path- whether regular, honors, AP, or a class with extra help. This means that you do have to push yourself to get on the track you want but you are encouraged to challenge yourself throughout high school. The staff is truly caring. Although you occasionally will end up with someone whose teaching style might not be to your taste (as is true anywhere), every teacher I had was willing to put in extra time to help you reach your goals. The extracurriculars, especially the amazing performing arts but also the exceptional sports and varied clubs, make the high school experience memorable. In general I found the students to be open-minded, respectful, and friendly. Great place to be!
