Pahoa Elementary has made AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) for the past few years and is in Good Standing-Unconditional according to the NCLB status guidelines.

My son is in Kindergarten and has some special conditions and medical concerns. His teacher seems to care and their methods seem organized, more so than the charter schools in the area. However, the administrators themselves seem to be less than motivated in assisting a child with special needs. I have to really be on them to do much about this. We will see how this progresses.

Being a member of the Pahoa school community has been a rewarding and fullfilling experience. We are have the highest population in the state of students on the free/reduce lunch program. Many of our parents do not have jobs or cars so most of our students (over 80%) ride the school bus. The counselors' work hard with the teachers to improve student attendance and to monitor student behavior. The administration and support staff co-work with the teachers to support student learning. For the past three years this school has met the state's math and reading goals keeping the school out of the "restructuring" status. I often ask what the Pahoa Elementary faculty are doing in the classroom that has helped to improve these scores. All that comes to mind is that the educators are remembering to teach with compassion & empathy when working with students and families of poverty. This will be my third year working at Pahoa Elementary School and am reminded everyday by the young students, that I am making a difference and appreciated for all I do.

My son's ages 6 & 8 were enrolled in Pahoa Elementary last year. My 8 year old that normally loves going to school, and learning dreaded going to school ...His teacher was mean, and from the sounds of it racist. The kids are rough & tough and I simply do not want my children subjected to those types of behaviors ...We had such a bad experience with this school that we are homeschooling our children.

I am the mother of a 7 year old girl. That I had to pull out of Pahoa Elem because she was constantly being bullied there. Pahoa Elem often let me down by not telling me when the attacks were happening. On August 26th I received a call from the office stating my child had missed the bus because she was goofing off with her friends. Turns out the real reason was because she had been assaulted by a boy that had earlier assaulted her this year. She missed the bus because she was in a conference at the school. Administration is more interested in blaming the victim than taking responsibility, and I had to put in a call to the district office to geet them to even talk to me about the incident. In my opinion the reviews dated July 23 are not real.

Teachers put in a lot of their own time and money and treat everyone as family. There is a new commitment to reading and math and it shows in my son.:)

my son is going into grade one. his teacher that he had for kindergarden was amazing. he is already doing math and reading with great proficiency. I appreciate their commitment to always do better.
