My granddaughter is going to second grade this year and she loves her school and teachers. The parent who said homework was coloring pictures, school just started and the teacher needs time to adjust to 21or 22 students give me a break how did it go on after a month?

My daughter just started 1st grade this year 2014-2015. She has been bringing homework that is for Kindergarten. School started on August 1st, yet her homework has been to draw pictures. ??? Come on! No wonder kids are behind. Shouldn't they be learning math or subjects that matter? This past weekend was a 3-day weekend and they didn't have homework. How are kids supposed to learn and move forward?

My son enrolled in 2009 as a 1st grader. He was newly adopted and spoke only a few words of english. He had a difficult transition. Through it all, the teachers and staff (and to a large extent, his classmates) of Waiakea Elementary School were extraordinarily patient and understanding. I rate his educational experience as 5-stars up until this year. This year, his 5th grade year, has been less than satisfactory. His teachers seem pre-occupied with other things. I'm not sure what is so different about his curriculum this year that makes it so hard on his teachers, but the difference is noticeable. I'm not alone in this perception, I overheard one of the other parents saying the same thing. Of course, two opinions or experiences do not necessarily reflect on the general performance of the school - but they are the only experience that I know. Overall, this year's disappointments bring my overall rating of the school to four stars. (BTW, my wife and I both attended this school when we were kids.)

This school has a Vice Principal who does not care about the students that attend. Students that are under section 504 are not being seen on a weekly basis as intended. This school is one of the worst schools on the island!

From seeing my grandchildren having the hardest time in school and not wating to go... to placing them in Waiakea and seeing them be in the TOP 100 of all schools in Hawaii to go to a Geographic Bee. I have seen nothing but wonderful teaching/ and teachers that love what they are doing and really care about the children. I had always been told that it's better for a child to go to a 'smaller' school. I have news for you.. this is so not true. My grandchildren have soared since going to Waiakea. We are 2nd generation of children going to waiakea.. and am so happy to have them there. Way to go Waiakea!
