Overall not a good environment in regards to the special education department. Staff is rude and scolds children with special needs more than what would be needed. In my own opinion it is not professional and the special education department should practice patients more often.

I thought children just complained about school because all kids hate school right? Wrong!!! We transferred to Newport-Mesa School District (Costa Mesa) after Handy and the girls THRIVED!!I had two children attend Handy for kindergarten and 1st grade. One looks Hispanic and the other looks Caucasian. Almost the entire school is Hispanic and one of my children was called "Whitey" in lieu of her name and the other was teased because she was "Mexican and didn't speak Spanish" this wasn't a big deal for the teachers or staff, which was extremely alarming to me. Also, one of the teachers would routinely draw unhappy faces on a kindergartner's work when she had tried but still didn't understand. Also, why are the people who work in the front office of a school not kind to children? Weird.

I have both my daughters at this school. One attends Kinder an the other attends 6th grade. Their first year at Handy 2013. My 6th grader was bullied, but principal and her teacher took it very serious, maybe because I made a huge dilema about it. Their lunch menu is not that appetizing (per my kids). On the other hand teachers are great @ Handy.
