Scrappy little school filled with educators who care about their students. Small enough to be personal, community and relationship based. Large enough to offer rigorous programs for students. STEM focused, project based learning curriculum.

My student started at EBIA from another school and really found his "home place". He feels cared for and lovingly held accountable.

As an 8th grade parent, I appreciate that the academics are strong at the school and that they have a solid, STEAM and project-based learning curriculum. My son appreciates all the extracurriculars like golf club, a different sport every season, drumline and Science Olympiad. He is surrounded by friends and when I tell him what my middle school experience was like he can’t relate to how uncomfortable it was because EBIA is such a welcoming environment.

Our family was looking for an alternative to our neighborhood OUSD middle school and a parent at my son’s elementary school recommended EBIA.We like its project-based learning approach and how they scaffold to serve students at all academic levels. Our son was able to test a grade up in math and learn advanced science concepts in the Science Olympiad program. The Science Olympiad Program is the only one of its kind offered in an Oakland public school. Our son particularly finds his Math and English Language Arts (ELA) classes most stimulating. The group project dynamics can be challenging, but it’s an introduction to the difficulties working on projects in the real world so the kids learn to work through conflicts. EBIA uses a restorative justice program for resolving conflicts and has a full-time school therapist which is a great resource for middle school age kids.EBIA’s middle school also offers a robust sports program, offering several choices every fall, winter and spring. Our kiddo runs XC/track and plays basketball. He really loves team sports.

We have been so happy with EBIA lower school and plan to continue on to the upper school. This is the first school in Oakland I’ve seen apply their budget in the right places. The teachers are happy and inspiring, the after school programs are more robust than some of the biggest middle schools in the area. The social/emotional support for the kids has been amazing. The project based learning curriculum keeps my kids engaged in their learning. If you are looking for an alternative to OUSDs middle school options I highly recommend checking out EBIA.

I’ve read a lot of reviews here about students with IEPs and I want to offer another perspective. My child requires a lot of services and the team always finds a way to make it work (even during distance learning). In elementary school (and first year at a different middle school) my child had a negative view of the help needed. At EBIA, my child has blossomed under a supportive special education team. There have been 2 teachers with whom I disagree about homework but the resource teachers help us to advocate and we usually end up with a great solution.

Amazing school for my my middle school daughter. Collaboration and project based has been amazing to help her learn and excel. I’m sending my second child there and am excited for his experience.

Great so far! My son looks forward to going to school. I love their curriculum and the fact that so much of the student's experience is based on collaboration. Nearly everything is project based and students present a slideshow of their projects to their parents at the end of each trimester. It's definitely not a traditional school and my son really is soaking up a lot of knowledge.

EBIA is a true gem of a school. The project based learning keeps the classes interesting and brings the curriculum to life. My son is at the lower school and he is always excited about what he is doing in his classes. The school has three intersessions each school year. My son always looks forward to this change in his schedule. This past week he went mountain biking, made beats, learned drumming and cpr, and spent a day team building with his classmates. The small size is nice and the teachers have been very accessible. We love EBIA!

My kid is learning to collaborate and problem solve (something that is critical in today's world) and is not taught in standard curriculum in a day to day. I feel he will leave this school with not only an education but critical life skills and college readiness. EBIA is a newish school for Oakland has been on a steady path to success and continues grow and improve. They are not perfect but have been great for us so far and I'm excited about what they offer to prep kids for college.

My son is a 10th grader at EBIA, and has attended since it opened 5 years ago, as a 6th grader. Middle school was great, and high school is even better. When asked what he likes about the school, he responds: his teachers, classes (what he is learning) and the kids. He is challenged and engaged by his teachers, the project-based, blended learning model suits him well. Leadership team is amazing, and I am impressed by what they have accomplished over the last 5 years.

We are only in our first year at EBIA (with a sixth grader), but we have been blown away by the project-based curriculum, the passionate teachers and the overall experience. We love the smaller size of the school and are very happy to have our daughter here.

I think EBIA has provided an excellent and supportive learning environment, and I am really surprised at some of the negative reviews- it almost seems like they are rating a very different school- I have high expectations and they are generally met by EBIA. The teachers are phenomenal, especially compared to other Oakland public schools, and I really think the staff is exceptionally competent.

This school has no plan. They call themselves "innovators" but they can't even manage to change their caller ID (it still says Christian Academy when you call them). And forget it if your child has an IEP. My child has been left to twist in the wind. Leadership is abysmal and is devoid of compassion. I had high hopes for EBIA, but with the revolving door of staffing, and poor execution of an ambitious plan, I have to say that putting my child here is one of the worst mistakes I've made as a parent.

Teachers lack emotion and willingness to teach students and School Leader is not really a leader when she doesn't have anything to lead, more like winging it. So done with this school and all the flaws it has, 4 different math teachers in one year and the current one is using Khan academy. Great teaching I guess. FYI this is a review for the high school not the middle school.

EBIA has Continued to be unrealistic with their ambitious plan, failing to solve even the most simple problems in order to move forward with goals and ideas that are just not going to happen

Strong inclusion of all students academically and socially. A large focus on relevant and rigorous innovative projects as well as personalized learning.
