Winthrop Elementary is fantastic. We moved to Melrose as the first of our children was approaching school age, and were at first a little apprehensive as to whether the schools would measure up with other choices in nearby towns like Winchester, Lexington, and Arlington. The Winthrop school facility is antiquated, but this is more than made up for in the factors that really count: good leadership, good teaching quality, and parental involvement. Current (2015) principal John Maynard is great, and makes an effort to get to know each family. In the years that we've been there so far, I've been thoroughly happy with each of the teachers our kids have had. The volunteer-run activities like the science fair, talent show, drama club, and lego club are all well organized. I was especially impressed, for example, with the way they were able to get all the kids in the science fair -- even as young as kindergarten -- to really dig into questions that could be addressed with the scientific method as opposed to the tired practice of building vinegar and baking soda volcanoes.

Winthrop is a great school with seasoned teachers who are passionate about their profession and committed to the education of their students. The school has finally had some consistency in leadership both at the superintendent level and the principal. The district could improve how it engages parents as the partners in education they are.
