Good principals are hard to find... The Horace Mann Community "lucked out" with Dr.Cobbs. She sets the tone and character of the school with her personality: warm, loving and involved in her students' efforts to negotiate every day life. Attitude means everything to students and her's is the best. Melrose, don't lose this one.Grandpa.

School is on the upswing. Old principal is out and city is making staff changes. Building is old and needs lots of repairs. Heating system, technology are very poor. Building needs to be cleaned up and painted. Building is a mess! Staff is improving. New hires are great. New curriculum director is bringing city to a higher standard.

Horace Mann is a fantastic school, my child was identified with special needs early and each teacher has been phenomenal in helping her achieve success. The staff is caring and it is a place where community thrives. They challenge the kids appropriately and identify issues early. I highly recommend this school to any parent.

HM is ok. Not great, just average. Many teachers need to retire and just aren't very good. There is hardly any homework given, which in this day and age is unaccepable. Half the teachers don't even know how to use email. The home-school communication is lacking. The after school program is very expensive. On a positive note, the PTA is super involved.
