I have taught at several schools in the district, and this is by far the most welcoming school I've been at. The teachers in both lower and upper grades are dedicated and work hard to make this lower income school the best it can be. The hallways and rooms are clean. The restrooms and drinking fountains are updated. I think the bad reviews were prior to the pandemic. The principal is supportive of both teachers and parents.

The fact that by default there is no one to answer the phone and that messages are not returned says a lot about this school.

My son is in 5th grade and has attended this school since TK. We sent his older brother to Los Cerritos because Garfield had such a low rating on this site when he was entering kindergarten (3 in 2012). Due to transportation and other issues we decided to let our second son attend Garfield. Fortunately, I would rate the teachers at Garfield higher and say my younger son has had a better learning experience than my older son did. I have asked him many times over the years if has experienced or witnessed any bullying and he has always said no. I have felt much more of a caring atmosphere at Garfield than a school more interested in getting high test scores.

I was very unhappy in the manner in which the administration deals with bullying and the lack of support it gave my child's teacher. Principal seems afraid to be called out as racist in dealing with bullying, which only empowers the bully. As a result of her inaction, it runs rampant in the school.

Garfield is a horrible school to send your child.High descrimination, bullying and disrespect towards the students and parents. Students are treated very unfairly by the staff and teachers. It is not a safe environment. As parents we don't believe the teachers are properly qualified to teach our children academically. If we could change our child to a different school, we would, but unfortunately our local schools in the west side of Long Beach are highly neglected by the school district.
