My daughter is a 6th grader at IVA this year. She has always loved school, but this year we have seen her come alive with her learning in such powerful ways! You know when you ask your kid, "How was school today?" and they grunt something like, "Good." Now, she is overflowing with excitement and elaboration about what she is learning about and the ways they are learning. She loves her teachers and frequently tells us how easy they are to talk to. To be honest, I was wary of taking this "different" path to middle school, but for our kid, it has been the absolute "right" choice. I encourage anyone who is in that difficult place of choosing middle school to check out this hidden gem. It's a beautiful place where an adolescent's WHOLE self is honored and supported in such beautiful ways.

The staff and leadership at this school are remarkably caring, competent, and thoughtful. They make learning about the process vs. the product -- and they care deeply about who their students are becoming as people. A very passionate and visionary school!

This school is committed to students learning through intellectual virtues. It has opportunities for students to create passion driven projects and has project based learning. The school has a safe and warm feeling when you are walking inside and among the students. This is a great place for students who are looking to take their learning to the next level and prepare themselves to be successful in colleges or careers.

This school is a gem in Long Beach! The school leaders, teachers, parents, and students make this place a community where students are engaged in learning, not just completing tasks. If you are looking for a high school in Long Beach, this should be on your list to visit.

My son is thriving in this environment. He is treated as an individual and is learning about himself and who he wants to be as well as common core. He comes home excited to talk about what he learned or shared in class. The entire staff strives to get to know the students as individuals and to teach in a way that encourages learning. Their motto is "Equipping Every Student to Think Well: Creatively, Critically, and with a Capacity for Self-Growth."

THE BEST SCHOOL/LEARNING EXPERIENCE MY SON HAS EVER HAD

My son attends here and he is absolutely thriving. I love the emphasis on the different virtues... autonomy, open mindedness, curiosity, etc. I feel like he is learning to be a thoughtful and intelligent human being, rather than just memorizing information. And they took his least favorite subject and made it is favorite - math!! The small size also allows for a more personal approach and being new, they were able to take the most recent research into account to create the culture of the school. Love it!
