We had an exceptionally negative experience at the Smith School, and we’re not alone. Our neighbors and a number of our children’s friends had similar poor experiences, predominantly because of bullying. The school is notoriously unresponsive about the bullying behavior of the children. In many cases, the parents of the bullies are never notified of the behavior, and so they’re shocked when other parents reach out about it. In other cases, the concerns of parents of bullied children fall on deaf ears, with the abuse - both physical and verbal - continuing. We were, fortunately, able to pull our kids out and put them in a private school. However I know that’s not an option available to everyone, and so worry about the students forced to continue to endure the effects of this unresponsive school’s administration.

We have been very impressed with the Lincoln School. The access to specialists (reading, speech, etc., etc.) is excellent, as is the skill level of the teachers who quickly recognize any need for such resources. The classes are small and include strong lead teachers and assistants who really get to know the kids in their classes. We've been impressed with the K-4 principal who also takes the time to get involved with the students. The art teacher is excellent. The kids do some interesting projects, connecting art with other subjects. We recently had a field trip to the deCordova sculpture park that combined K students with 6th grade partners. The third graders participated in a "wax museum" this spring which was very impressive. The teachers are creative and fun and work to build classrooms that are interesting, positive environments for the kids. We love the school!

The previous parent comments about Hanscom are misleading. The Hanscom School is administered by Lincoln, but its student body is limited to children living in Hanscom Air Force Base housing. Money provided under this contract is used on base, except that some administrative personnel share duties (and funding) with the Lincoln School. Graduates of the Hanscom School go on to Bedford High School, under a contract with that town. Lincoln residents have no access to the Hanscom School except though an authorized base pass which may be issued at the Base Commander's discretion when needed. The Lincoln School serves the rest of the residents of Lincoln, and has an active Metco program to help add some diversity to the student population. The quality of education is excellent, and the buildings are located in a woodsy campus-like setting. The town is currently discussing options for upgrades to the physical structures. My daughter loved her years there and has gone on to great success in college. Graduates of the Lincoln School choose between the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, or Minuteman Regional Vocational School (or any number of private schools).
