My kids didn’t experience academic rigor at Red Oak. My kids’ math and writing skills were average to below average. My child didn’t feel safe in the classroom, and it took months to get support from the admin we needed. Socially you will be okay if you befriend other parents. Otherwise, it is a struggle socially for some kids because there are so few kids to mix with year to year, and there are many parent cliques. (And yes, cliques are “everywhere,” but when you are in a smaller school, it is extra challenging to be amongst cliques as an adult and as a child.) Many changes have occurred in the past few years with the high turnover in staff as well as changes in curriculum and how support for teachers look like both in and out of the classroom.

A diverse dual language elementary with excellent programs and strong family involvement. Very inclusive school with kind students. Red Oak had a revamp in 2018 and now is an absolute gem in Highland Park! That's when my family joined the school. This is the best of the dual language schools for the district. Multiple therapy dogs in the school, hot lunch and breakfast every day, international pot luck dinners, talent shows, great art, amazing theatrical performances and a fun teaching environment. Principal is thoughtful and fun. Focus is on the kids, not the parents....which is great since that is what it really is all about! Kids build each other up and dislike misbehavior from their peers.

Excellent school with loads of activities with excellence
