This school has helped my two Autistic kids reach their full potential, the District provide ample resources and the teachers makes sure special needs are addressed.

Awful! Leadership is terrible. Supervisors never watch the kids, teachers yelling at kids and parents! Education is awful! Moved out of this location due to lack of respect and care for the childrens well being. Principal does not support childrens mental health what so ever. My daughters second grade teacher would always be “too busy” to help her if she had a question or advised me to use YouTube for homework help. District over all is terrible. They dont care or listen to parents concerns and make the parents out to be the bad ones. If you can avoid sending your child to this school / district.

Our child has had a very positive experience at Horizon Elementary. After attending Kindergarten at another school, he was significantly behind the other students when he arrived at Horizon in 1st grade. Now, in 5th grade, he is scoring at or above the state averages. His spelling is exceptional. His use of grammar and punctuation is good. His math skills are solid and he is passionate about whatever they do in social studies. Most importantly, he is enthused about learning. We also believe that in-spite of the pandemic and distant learning, his social development has been good. He seems to get along with all his classmates and has a number of good friends who all seem nice. On the rare occasions that there has been a problem and someone has been ostracized or set apart, the teachers and administration have addressed the issue appropriately and effectively. We’ve generally been impressed with the way conflicts have been resolved and the kids have been empowered to utilize these situations as positive learning experiences. There’s never been any incidents of bullying that we are aware of.We recommend Horizon and believe that a solid elementary school education is available there.

All of the teachers are great, they have a solid curriculum, the students are nice and friendly and I love that there’s a ton of diversity here, with respect for differences.

The school is okay. Most of the teachers are great but the principal is a horrible leader. The previous principal was so involved with the kids and they respected her. The new principal does not have the same effect on the kids.

I will preface this by saying that my oldest child just started kindergarten this year and that I grew up in Florida so I am not familiar with the school system in Illinois. I was worried that this school wasn't a 9 or 10, but decided to just see how it goes, and if the school wasn't good, we would move. I will say that my experience with the school so far has been really positive. The principal, Dr Gehrig, is very involved. My son's teacher, Mrs. Weathers, is very well organized, very responsive, adaptive, and truly seems to know and care for my child. She will partner with parents on developing good study habits right from the start, which is a lifelong gift. The school in general is excellent at communication. It seems to me that biggest drawback to the school, at least as much as i can tell so far, is the fact that it is housed under U-46. The district is large, and schools much accomplish much with little funding. Horizon seems to be doing well despite this. My personal rating for this school is much higher than the greatschools rating.

This school not good. They have major bullying problems. The teacher are ok, some are good but some are horrible. They lack funds for activities. There too many students in one class. There curriculum is not as update as other schools in the district. Overall my kids have been going here since kindergarten and I have 4th and 6th grader and I feel my kids never got great education.

I love this school! Unfortunately this will be our last year here. The Principal Dr. Gehrig is very proactive and has good command of leadership. This is shown with the teachers and staff as well as the PTO officers! The students are motivated to strive hard and be their best in such a supportive school environment!

I don't like this school at all for my kids. First of all the school is over crowded. My son has 35 kids in his class. I also feel that some of the teachers are lazy about teaching. My son was bullied and it took a while for it to get resolved. Too many kids and too many programs going in school, it not very organized. That's why we are moving.

Wonderful school, much better than Centennial. At least they have transportation, also, much more organized and friendlier staff and much better playground for the children! The principal at Centennial is a Crab in a half. I was not pleased with Centennial at all! I pulled my child out and tranfered her to Horizon, because we bought a home in the dist! thank God! Much happier now and so is my child.
