Great School. Very professional and amazing staff. Has helped me a great deal during an unfortunate time. They have their priorities in a good place. My daughter has grown and improved a great deal in her attitude, behavior, and capability since attending. Would strongly recommend Northview School District.

East Oakview is a true "community" school. From the moment you walk in the door and interact with the Office Staff you get the sense that this is a place that really cares about the kids and families it serves! All the specials teachers do an excellent job - music, art, PE, and library. Students also receive Mindfulness (Social/Emotional Awareness) classes weekly; which has been an awesome edition! Both my daughters needed help with Speech, and just adored the Speech teacher! She does a fantastic job of working with the teachers and parents and building up the kids' confidence in themselves. My younger daughter also received extra help with reading from the Reading Specialist and quickly caught up to her grade level, then surpassed it to become an avid reader today! The librarian does an excellent job getting the kids excited about reading by bringing in different authors and illustrators. He also keeps up on the latest and greatest books! A few improvements could be made: the playground equipment and school itself are old and need to be updated/replaced, air conditioning is also needed throughout. I would also like to see more emphasis placed on testing kids to gauge where their strengths and weaknesses lie. This way teachers can more accurately teach to what their individual students need. For example, more small group or 1-on-1 instruction for struggling learners, and even some challenge lessons, or "teacher's helper" type roles for advanced students. A few years ago a Field School (outdoor school) was added to the campus at East Oakview. One of my daughters has participated since it began, and she just loves it! It has been a great experience for her to learn through hands-on, outdoor activities and exploration of the natural environment. They take monthly Field Trips to different locations around the area - Hoffmaster State Park, Platte River State Fish Hatchery, Muskegon Winter Sports Complex, Dean Lake, etc. The kids have learned how to garden, compost, build fires, go fishing, plant trees, and so much more! They are becoming true Conservationists! I do not understand why this school receives such a low rating. Yes, there are improvements that could be made, but is it a less than average school, absolutely NOT! The teachers are dedicated to both the school (many have been teaching here for years) and the students! BOTTOM LINE: the 4/10 rating is NOT a fair evaluation of this school or its culture!

My kid loved it here. Sad to see the bullying issues a few years ago pulling the rating down.

I am not sure if it is the school as a whole or just this inadequate teacher. She reported very good things and all of a sudden had list of concerns she never reported to us. Then when we wanted a meeting she said things were fine and not needed. Only to end up in a meeting a month later because she had concerns. To find out she never implemented the needs I informed her were needed for my child in pre-school. The principal was nice and apologized after the meeting. But not proactive at all. She again reported nothing for over a month then another email with concerns that she said has been present for weeks. I'm all about being proactive and helping my child and all children when it is needed. Waiting to do something only hurts the children. I'm not sure if this is how the school does things or if she is just not a good teacher. Regardless, I have been very unimpressed. My child attended pre-school for two years with wonderful actively engaging teachers. My child may never come back to this school. A school who acts immediately is what all kids deserve.

Allowing my child to begin kindergarten at East Oakview is a mistake that I will regret for the rest of my life. We changed schools after the first marking period due to very poor supervision of the children with a serious bullying problem. My son was bullied within two weeks of starting at this school. He has attended daycare for years and comes from a large close family. We has had significant exposure to various interactions with other children prior to attending this school and bullying has never been an issue for us. We reported our concerns to his teacher, principal, and the school social worker to no avail. Playground supervision was still minimal (2-3 volunteer parents who watched their own children and appeared to spend more time gossiping with one another than actually supervising the children). Since changing schools, my son is happy, healthy, and once again well adjusted. Our experience at East was a nightmare!!! Keep your children away from that disgrace of a school.

This school was a mess, they had a whole anti-bully program but it was a joke. They allowed my daughter to be severely bullied in Kindergarten and 1st grade. She went from happy and loving school to disliking school and struggling. When I spoke with the teachers they acted as if they had no idea. My daughter was pretty much told she was the problem and "not to tell the teachers unless Conner hurt her." It wasn't until we moved that she had the courage to tell me since the staff at school were telling her not to say anything. Our new school thankfully has been helpful get my daughter back on track and we are having no issues now but East Oakview was a joke. There were fights and cops at the bus stop and no one seemed to want to deal with problem students. When students in the higher grades did experience troubles instead of helping they started pushing them into the Alt school right away. Really a well off school with lazy staff and leaders.
