The students are expected to know how to read and write proper A,B,Cs both in upper and lower cases and numbers or 1,2,3… before they even begin KG at this school. They expect students to know how to draw people, animals, things, etc. before they even begin KG. They want your children to know American history, science, social studies, math in kindergarten and in grade 1. Teacher to students ratio is 22:1 or 23:1. The teachers purposely grade the exams at CTES very strictly even in KG and in 1st grade. Students in first grade are expected to read extremely well and write multiple paragraphs with proper English grammar, spellings, vocabulary and punctuations before they can move up to the next grade.Principal and teachers at this school never listen to parents’ concerns or use parents’ advice to alter or make small changes into their rigid and extremely difficult curriculums. Kids are often bullied, made fun of and ridiculed. Most teachers purposely make learning very difficult even for the average students. They expect students to study and learn everything at home. They expect parents to teach kids how to read and write at home and to read them stories and ask questions on a nightly basis as if we don’t have jobs or other responsibilities.Teachers at CTES make their curriculums purposely, extremely difficult for students with a little bit of learning problems. May God help you if your kid(s) suffers from ADHD, anxiety or any other physical, mental or learning disabilities. My kids often come home crying cause someone said or did something mean to them. My kids hate going to school and cry every morning. Parents concerns are often neglected. We find it is not a safe place. I don’t recommend this school to anyone except to those people whose kids can multitask, are above average, super smart and who can stand up against bullies. Even though this school has an 85% minority student population, most of their teachers are white. They don’t care about diversity except as a lip service or to celebrate it as a superficial, one day event. If you’re a minority or speak a language other than English then this is not a good school for your kids. I wish someone had warned me about it before I moved into this part of town. Some teachers pretend to be sympathetic, but they really aren’t on your side. They would gladly fail your kid at the end of the year. What really upsets me is that teachers cover for one another instead of caring for the well being of our kids.

Very poor and culturally insensitive along with promoting disability and racial bigotry.

HORRIBLE, looking to move from the zip code that feeds into this school. Worried about my child's desire to learn.

I am the current principal, Kirk Eggleston. The score of 6/10 is concerning as it reflects a low (and inaccurate) Equity Score. Our Gap Group students (Black, Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged, ELL, & Students with Disabilities) are ALL meeting or exceeding 2016-2017 AMO targets. Our teachers effectively differentiate instruction for the needs of every student with a growth centered approach to learning. We challenge and engage our students, partner with parents, and take pride in our diversity. We are an inclusive school with over 20 languages spoken and nearly 40 nationalities represented in our student body of 705. High expectations for all have earned CTES the Virginia Performance Index Excellence Award four years in a row! Please contact me should you have any questions about our high achieving, learning loving, and EQUITABLE school at 804-364-0055. CT is a great place to be!

Little to be desired for a child with ADHD or needs extra assistance. The teachers do not get enough assistance in the classroom. This school is extremely challenging as well! They've qualified for a less structured SOL guideline thus teachers are able to move from the normal curriculum. I believe my child is pushed too hard at this school. I think if my child started with this structure then maybe it wouldn't feel like too much. Forced to memorize math problems and complete 30 in 1 minute, study nouns and pronouns and read chapter books only in the 2nd grade. For a normal child, maybe this would just be a challenge, but for a child struggling with ADHD it's been a challenge and hard to keep up with not only the fast paced curriculum but for homework too! The teacher only sticks to scheduled Counceling dates set forth by the principle, but refuses to meet outside those designated time (once every 3 months). They also cater to the families that has a "stay at home parent". Even open house was scheduled durin the middle of the day of which you would have to take a day off to meet the teacher. It's been a very frustrating year and I look forward to moving my child next year.

The teachers and office staff are top notch! Everyone cares about The students! The PTA and community work together to make the Education of the students the top priority at all times. It is my understanding That the new principal with his focus on 21st century skills will bring Colonial Trail Elementary to the next level of Excellence!

Colonial Trial is a fantastic school. Principle has great leadership and the pinciple teacher dynamics are great and the school is run at very high standard not only academically but artistically and physically. Teachers are very dedicated and mostly live in the area and have deep vested interest in the well being of the children and the community. Children from Kindergarten on are pooled into small groups and given customized academic enrichments. Parents involvement is great, lots of parents volunteers year round. My older child is going to middle school this year and my younger one is a rising 2nd grader. We love CTES!

Colonial Trail is an excellent school! My third child has just started kindergarten here and is having a wonderful experience. He can't wait to get on the bus each morning. His teacher has provided him with such a smooth transition into elementary school. My middle child also had this same teacher, and she was amazing with him as well!I feel that the teachers at this school go beyond the call of duty in making sure all individual needs are met in the classroom. We have had only good experiences with the faculty and staff .My oldest child who is now in middle school could not have been any more prepared. Colonial Trail does an outstanding job in educating children.

This is an outstanding school. We transferred to this school last year so that we could provide a better education for our children. It was the best decision. What a difference this school has made in our children's lives. They are more confident, are excelling in math and reading and get off the bus smiling, excited to go back to school. The principal is exceptional and always available. The school is great with communication to the parents and the safety of the children. My children's teacher is passionate about her job and the success of her students. We rate this school outstanding!!
