After reading over some of the reviews I have to wonder if they're all talking about the same school. I completely agree with all the positive feedback and am shocked about the negative, which couldn't be more false. My son's experience at St. Andrew Avellino has been amazing! I have never encountered a more dedicated and caring principal - Ms. Hanna is the absolute best! The teachers are top notch - their passion for teaching is inspiring. The curriculum is outstanding - especially junior high - the preparation for high school is incomparable. There is absolutely NO favoritism and NO toleration for bullying. The students in this school are genuinely happy, which says a lot. All the parents that I have encountered over the years have had nothing but great things to say about their children's experience here and I couldn't agree more. If you are looking for a solid education in a safe and compassionate environment, St. Andrew is the place to be!

This school is a jewel. The teachers are amazing. This is not your average school. The teachers go above and beyond with the children. MS.HANNA THE PRINCIPAL IS AMAZING. THE teachers are fully vested in the children. Unfortunately some parents have voiced a different opinion these are the parents that don't get their way. Teachers arrive at that school at 7 and don't leave till 6. They are dedicated and Ioving. Middle school is the best at SAA. The children are well prepared for High school. Please take a tour and see how great the school is.

The worst school in the area. Kidergarten teacher was so rude with my son. She lied about my son’s grades and told us that he isn’t smart. Now he’s in the G&T program. First grade teacher is a screamer. If you don't agree with her, she yells at you, no matter where you are.I had to get my son out of there, because a volunteer mom scratched his arm. For the director and teacher it was nothing. I had to take him to the doctor, as the wound was infected. They only yelled at me in the street, when I made the claim.

I'm an alumna from this school and frankly, can't think of anything good to stay about my experience. Let me explain.First of all, the school loves to promote the idea that their students received a premium education, that exceeds the standard of local public schools. That is completely false. Upon attending a public high school I realized I received an inferior education in comparison to what was standard amongst my classmates (particularly in regards to math)...and that's not even my main issue. Many of the teachers at this school are downright cruel, and utilize the infamous "catholic guilt" to shame their students into submission. I can't count how many times I witnessed a teacher publicly humiliating a student because they were different-- messy, energetic, too talkative, too curious, neurodivergent, etc. Many of the people who work here just seem to hate children.Unique-ness, creativity and critical thinking isn't valued at this school, rather the staff seems to try their best to metaphorically beat it our of their students. There's also so much favoritism, with students with parents who are church members being treated noticeably better than the rest. This leads to an extremely clique-y culture amongst the students. I graduated a few years ago and have only just realized how terribly I (and many other "different" students like me) were treated. I've also talked about my experience here in therapy... so I think that tells you everything you need to know. Please think carefully before sending your children here, there are so many better places in the neighborhood.

My children have attended St. Andrews since Nursery and never once did I ever consider leaving the school. My kids are in the upper grades now and I couldn't be happier with my choice of St. Andrews. They have received an exceptional education. I can't begin to count how many times I've heard that St. Andrew's does an excellent job of preparing the kids for high school. They have teachers that really challenge the students, and prepare them for the future. Most importantly, St. Andrew's has Mrs. Hanna. A principal can make or break a school and how fortunate are we to have the very best there is to offer.

A STEM lab? That’s really funny. I graduated this school a few years ago and still attend my church. The teacher who is in charge of the STem lab is a very nice woman but she shouldn’t even be allowed to dust the computers. She knows nothing about technology. She was a nice regular teacher but if the school is bragging about a stem lab its ridiculous. There were some nice kids here and it was an okay experience but really it was boring. There were never any trips and the teachers never changed up any of the books or tests because my sister is doing the same things now that we did when we were there. I think its a nice school to play sports for but go somewhere else where they don’t play favorites so much and the work is more interesting.

This is a terrible school. I would give it zero stars if I could.

“The teachers are willing to offer help and tutoring to students who aren’t doing well” The poster forgot to mention the important part- for a price. A complete farce and an unethical one at that. Teachers tutoring the siblings of present students in such a small school breeds favoritism. My son’s friends were tutored by the following year’s teachers when they struggled with math and it was very obvious they were favored by those same teachers the following year when they were their actual students. Teachers should NOT be tutoring kids in the same school. The bigger issue is how atrocious the math instruction in the 7th and 8th grade actually is and how NOTHING is done about it. The principal and pastor should be ashamed of themselves. If I could give this school zero stars I would. Look at St. Mel’s and St. Kevin’s before making any decisions about this place and talk to as many parents of graduates as you can.

St. Andrew Avellino is an outstanding school. There is a great rapport berween students, parents, faculty and principal. The school’s standardized test scores are always among the best in the Diocese of Brooklyn which is a testament to the education they are receiving. This year, the school added a STEM lab and next year students will be working with Chromebooks. If you are looking for a place to send your child next year, you can set up a tour or you can even have your child spend the day.

My child graduated from this school and I feel after reading these comments I have to respond with a candor review. My child struggled in the math department in 7th and and 8th grade but the teachers are willing to offer math help and tutoring to those who struggle. If you really want to see an accurate representation of grades look to see how many children are offered scholarships to attend high school. My only complaint is that the computers are not updated as they should be. St. Andrews is known across the board of education as being a school that prepares you vigorously for high school as well implementing a strong school work ethic. The children love their school and the principal has in fact never tolerated bullying. She knows every child by name from nursery to 8th grade. And it doesn’t end there because the graduates are always returning to visit on their days off. The teacher her CARE about your children and LOVE them.. I would recommend to anyone looking for the best education for their children.

Catholic Schools week is coming up and you should really look deeply into this school before registering your children here. You really won’t realize how substandard the school is until your children go to high school and fail foreign language and math. There is NO foreign language offered and the math instruction is basically non-existent in the middle school grades. Everyone is a bit too comfortable in their position- from the secretary to the teachers- and new blood is desperately needed. If you resign yourself to the fact that your children are receiving a subpar education in a low-key environment, you will be fine. If dealing with incompetence and resistance to change on a daily basis will bother you, look for another school. I cannot wait to be done with this place. Other posters mentioned leaving before your kids get attached. This is good advice. Better advice is not to start here in the first place. There are universal pre-k programs all over the neighborhood and the local public schools offer much more to parents and to students.

Very mediocre school. The principal hires her family members to work at the school in various capacities. with mediocre results. The teachers and staff have no idea how to deal with parents. They believe they are doing the parents a favor by working there. There is no foreign language. There is no real computer class. There are a few iPads that are old. The desktop computers are ancient and in poor working condition. The computer teacher is a nice lady but offers no real computer instruction. The gym is nice and kept well. The cafeteria has new tables and some other basic renovations but lunch is staffed by some of the nastiest lunch mothers. Recess is in the street but the lunch mothers scream at the kids for everything. St. Mels has a nice fenced- in area, as does Divine Wisdom. The standardized test scores have been trending down in the last couple of years. The school leans on the intelligence of some students who transfer in in 7th or 8th grade. Also, many students attend academies on the weekend also raise the over-all average. The junior high math teacher is flat. The parents complaints regarding the math teacher fall on deaf ears. If you choose this school, be prepared to pay for a math tutor in the junior high years. The science teacher is too rigid to be working with kids. The best way to gauge this school is their website. Compare it to the websites of surrounding schools. Their websites are dynamic and interesting. I would recommend Divine Wisdom- the principal has a lot to offer the school and its students. St. Mel's has an innovative science program with a 3-D printer.

Makes you want to turn atheist. No one likes you and no one will unless you kiss up and forced to step up

St. Andrew's is a fantastic school. Children are always challenged and encouraged to always put forth their best effort. 8th graders are accepted to high schools of their choice including both Catholic and specialized schools. I would highly recommend this school.

I have had several children go through the school and here are some facts: if your kid is not naturally bright they will struggle the whole time and feel less than adequate. if your kid is chatty or silly forget about it, you will have to listen to 20 minute lectures from the teacher about how your kid talks too much and they will recommend doctors and medication. if your kid doesn't step it up in 7th and 8th grade and kiss up to the teachers they will make their life horrible. My kids came home crying so many times in the upper grades, not because they failed a test or got in trouble but because their teacher teased them and my kids thought the teacher hated them. Why can't teachers respect children? One of my kids witnessed the 8th grade teachers make fun of a student who was easily distracted that my kid vowed to never be a catholic. My kid knew that kid's entire medical history by listening to the teachers talk and make fun of this child.

I've had 2 kids in the school for 8 & 5 years. I've certainly been very happy with the education. More than that, I've been thrilled with the internal sense of community at all levels.
