Durant High School is a wonderful school. It offers opportunities for all students to be successful after high school.

The school focuses on core subjects with several electives for students to chose from. Technology is large part of the curriculum and can be seen in all areas of study from core subjects to almost all electives! There are many dedicated teachers who go above and beyond to reach the wounded students who struggle with daily needs.

I am a parent of 3 students and Durant is the best Texoma area school by far! DHS always seems to be represented at state & national events. My daughter was in debate, & Ms. Worden takes them to Harvard every year to compete! The 140+ member award-winning marching band is the Pride of Durant. The building is state-of-the art with advanced technology. Each classroom has a promethean board, projector, doc camera, & more. Every student is given a netbook. Durant has "Brain Honey" that combines face-to-face teaching & online courses. My kids & I have access to all posted & upcoming assignments & grades for all of their classes. This eliminates the "nothing" answer when I ask them what they learned at school today. :) At the last teacher conference I visited the library and it is practically a bookstore! The school has AP classes, a broadcasted news team, forensics, awesome musical/drama productions & they have many onsite career programs. Students can earn college credit/career training while in HS. I know my kids won't only be prepared for college, but they will excel because they attended Durant HS. I wouldn't dream of sending them anywhere else. 5 stars!

Good Teacher Quality? Check! The teachers are well trained in dealing with all types of students. All teachers in the Durant district are required to obtain a master's degree within a few years of being hired and also attend at least 8 additional professional development opportunities during each school year. The teachers are sincerely concerned about their students. One way they could improve: smaller classes. Good Principal Leadership? Check! The current head principal is very visible in the school. I see her outside of her office each time I visit. She seems willing to try new things to see her school succeed. She attends almost all school events and activities and I think that's important. There are also two assistant principals in the building. Good Parent Involvement? Not really. One way Durant could improve is to have more parent and community involvement at the middle school and high school levels. Teenagers need parents who participate in their lives. Durant students and teachers are top-notch. I can only imagine how much better they would be with a little more parent support and guidance. When was the last time you volunteered at your child's school?

DHS is an above average school with a very good, professional staff. There are good students, brilliant students, and those barely hanging on. Our objective is to get the children to see what is out there! So many areas that they can entertain as jobs, careers, or just stepping stones to go further. Yes, we loose some, but we try to reach them all. We do believe that all can learn, but recognize that you must have the DESIRE to learn. This is our dream, our mission. Create the desire and guide them toward a future of endless possibilities! For some, we are their only hope. For some, we are only a stepping stone, as they know what they are going to become. The rest are looking in all directions, and we help them as lighthouses in the rough seas, or as navigators aiding them search for the lighthouses. Most will make something of themselves, with our help.

Our teachers desire that every DHS student experiences success--in and out of the classroom. Even though many come from difficult backgrounds and home lives, they work hard academically and exhibit character even when eyes aren't on them. We want our students to feel safe and valued for their uniqueness and know that they are intelligent and capable of achieving their dreams. We work on not only teaching skills they will need to pass a high-stakes test, but skills they will need to be successful in life. We devote ourselves to build relationships with our community, our parents, our students. We mentor students by opening our lives to them. We vulnerably share our personal struggles and victories so they know we are all overcomers. We understand that life is not fair, but it is more do-able with an education. When we pay full attention to our students, and provide them grace when they mess up, we see them become their best; people we proudly cheer when they cross the stage with a diploma in hand and a hope for their future.

I love Durant High School because we have the best students in the country. The teachers and staff support each other. We are passionate about reaching each and every student. We want to provide our students with every opportunity that will help them become successful citizens in the future. We are blessed to have many technological advantages. I love having a projector in my classroom. We are currently working on improving school spirit and helping our students support each other in various activities. We still have some room to grow, but we will achieve our goal.
